A day in presales, hour by hour

A composite day for a presales consultant at an IT services firm, built from our route research, not from one real person:

FromProject / Delivery ManagerToPresales / Bid Manager
  • 9:30 — A new RFP (request for proposal) lands for an AI-assisted claims-processing system. Read it twice. Mark every "shall" and every vague line.
  • 11:00 — Call with the account manager: who's the client, who are we up against, what do they care about?
  • 12:00 — Solution call with two architects. Sketch the approach in draw.io.
  • 14:00 — Estimate. Break the work down, list assumptions, add a risk buffer, explain it.
  • 15:30 — AI drafts the boilerplate sections from the content library. You check every claim.
  • 16:30 — Write three win themes specific to this client.
  • 17:30 — Review gate with delivery: "Can we actually do this for this price, by this date?"

That last meeting is the one you've sat in as a delivery manager — from the other side. Presales is where you stop inheriting over-promises and start preventing them.

Search interest: "presales jobs" about 480 a month in India and 90 in the US; "presales consultant" 390 and 90; "bid manager" 260 and 210 (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026).

🃏 Estimate Poker

Four cartoon colleagues each play a card for the effort on one RFP line item ("integrate the AI assistant with the claims system"): sales plays 2 weeks, the architect plays 6, the AI draft plays 1, and you play your card. Then the page reveals the hidden assumptions behind each card — the AI draft assumed a ready-made API (application programming interface) that doesn't exist; sales assumed no testing. Revise your card, write one assumption sentence, and the table shows how your estimate now reads to a client. Illustrative only; no real project data.

Six honest questions before presales

Q: Do I like the start of projects more than the middle? A: If kick-offs and scoping energise you and steady-state reporting drains you, presales fits.

Q: Can I handle losing? A: Most bids are lost. Presales people learn from the debrief and move on to the next one.

Q: Am I comfortable with deadlines I don't control? A: RFP deadlines are fixed by the client. Late-night pushes happen around submission.

Q: Can I say no to sales? A: Your value is protecting deliverability. If you always agree, you're not adding anything.

Q: Do I enjoy writing? A: You'll write and edit a lot, even with AI drafting the first version.

Q: What would I miss from delivery? A: Seeing the thing get built. Some people move back and forth between the two over a career.

Presales: the India and global picture

Many presales roles sit in IT services firms and global capability centres, responding to international RFPs. Government tenders are published on official government portals; check any tender only on official .gov.in domains.

The toggle only swaps text; nothing is stored.

Change at the junction: same skills, new line.

What changes when AI drafts the proposal

AI tools now draft a lot of proposal text from content libraries. That shifts the human work to three things: estimates (with assumptions a client can check), win themes (why this client should choose you, with evidence) and risk (including AI-specific risks such as wrong outputs and data handling). For AI-solution bids, NIST's voluntary AI Risk Management Framework is a neutral reference for risk sections (NIST).

Presales toolkit, checked 24 Oct 2026

As a delivery manager you already own the most useful presales tool: an estimate you've had to defend in a steering meeting. Add draw.io for solution diagrams (free) and keep any AI drafting assistant away from client documents unless your employer approved it. Bigger bid teams at Indian IT services firms use RFP software; learn whichever one the employer uses. The presales route page has the full list with links.

Proof project: sample RFP response

Rework one project you delivered into a mock bid. Turn its baseline plan into an estimate with assumptions, its RAID log into a risk section (add AI risks such as wrong outputs and data handling), and its lessons-learned into three win themes. Strip every client name. You'll know it's done when a peer can read the one-page executive summary and say what you'd deliver, by when, and what could go wrong. The route page describes the full sample response.

Your realistic 90 days

You've estimated projects, answered RFP questions and joined client calls to reassure buyers. Presales roles for AI services do this full-time: proposals, demos, estimates. You'll turn a project you delivered into a presales pack.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Job-hunt moves that matter for this route

  • Search 'presales consultant AI', 'solution architect presales', 'bid manager' on Naukri and LinkedIn.
  • IT services firms hire presales people with delivery backgrounds.
  • Your delivered-project story is your best pitch.

One search that fits your background

The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.

The two worries we hear most about this move

Do I need to be very technical for presales? You need to understand solutions well enough to estimate and explain them, and to know when to bring in specialists. Delivery managers who've seen projects go wrong often estimate better than pure architects. Will I have to sell? You'll support sales, not own targets. Most of the work is understanding client needs, writing proposals and estimates, and presenting solutions honestly.

Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.

Presales pay for delivery people

We haven't verified pay data for presales or bid roles. Compare live listings for your city and experience level rather than trusting any figure quoted in a course ad.

Fake tender and EMD scams

Fake tender sites sometimes ask for an "EMD" deposit to a personal account or via UPI. Real tenders are on official government domains, and nobody legitimate asks for your OTP. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs with anyone. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
