Three myths about low-code that keep good developers away

"Low-code means no real coding." Enterprise platforms like ServiceNow and Salesforce involve scripting, data modelling, integrations and testing. "Low-code" describes the tooling, not the thinking.

FromMy old roleToEnterprise Low-Code Developer

"It's only for beginners." Experienced platform developers and architects are in demand because large organisations run critical processes — IT service, HR, customer service — on these platforms.

"You'll be stuck forever." Platform skills lead to architecture, integration and consulting roles. Our view, based on how these careers commonly develop.

If you've been told your experience is "too enterprise", this route treats that as a strength. "servicenow developer jobs" sees about 2,400 searches a month in India and 1,600 in the US; "salesforce developer jobs" about 3,600 in India.

Low-code questions, answered

What does an enterprise low-code developer do?

Builds and maintains apps, workflows and integrations on a platform an organisation already uses — service desks, HR onboarding, approvals, customer portals.

Which platforms?

ServiceNow and Salesforce are most common in Indian job ads; Pega, Appian, OutSystems and Mendix appear too. Count them in 20 local ads and follow the data.

Can I practise for free?

Yes. ServiceNow's Developer Program has no program fees and includes one free Personal Developer Instance per member — not for production, and reclaimed after 10 days of inactivity. Salesforce offers free learning through Trailhead. Other vendors have their own developer offers; check their official sites.

Do I need certifications?

Often listed in ads. Check fees and requirements on each vendor's official training site; we haven't verified them today.

Who moves into this route?

Java developers most often; also support engineers and business analysts who've worked with these platforms. Platform-specific pages are planned.

Is it remote-friendly?

Some roles are; many partner and IT services roles are hybrid. Check each listing.

Is AI changing it?

Platforms are adding AI features. Developers who can configure and govern them are likely to be useful. Our view, not a forecast.

How to split your study hours

A suggested split of your weekly hours: 40% building on your free instance, 25% learning modules, 20% outreach, 15% reading job ads and notes. At 8 hours a week, plan about five weeks for the first proof.

Ticket to Workflow

A crumpled paper "request ticket" reads: "New laptop for new joiner, needs manager approval, IT to deliver by Monday." Tap it and it unfolds, step by step, into a neat workflow diagram — request form → manager approval → IT task → notification → done — with each step labelled with the platform feature that handles it. A second ticket ("HR document request") lets you try arranging the steps yourself. Fixed samples; nothing saved.

Your 30/60/90 quests

A proof project for platform roles

Build a small scoped app on your free instance: a custom table and form, an approval step, one server-side script, notifications, and a two-minute demo video. Write a short document explaining your design choices and what you kept out-of-the-box.

Skills that matter on any platform

  1. Data modelling — extending tables without breaking upgrades.
  2. Process thinking — turning a messy real process into clear steps, approvals and exceptions.
  3. Scripting discipline — small, tested scripts; no clever tricks future maintainers can't read.
  4. Upgrade awareness — vendors ship regular releases; customisations must survive them.
  5. Integration — REST calls in and out, often to HR, finance or identity systems.
  6. Stakeholder calm — process owners change their minds; you document and adjust.

A note for people coming from support roles

If you've used ServiceNow or Salesforce daily as a support engineer or analyst, you already know the screens and the pain points. That user's-eye view is valuable: you know which forms people hate. Start with the free instance and rebuild one process you wished worked better.

The train is real. So is the work. Start small.

Platform hiring: India and global view

India: partner firms, IT services platform practices and GCCs are major employers. Global: consultancies and partners; certified, experienced developers find remote roles more easily. Work authorisation is outside our scope.

Your realistic 90 days

Excel power users, BAs, SharePoint admins and junior developers come here. Firms build internal apps in Power Apps, Power Automate and similar platforms. Your starting artefact is a complex Excel tracker or Access database your team depended on.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • Switching stacks after 40? These platforms reward people who understand approvals, SLAs and ITIL. That understanding is your seniority.
  • Months without work. ServiceNow gives free personal developer instances; a dated catalogue-item build there answers the gap.
  • No B.Tech. Partners screen on platform badges and a demo more than degree.
  • Spec-writing in English. Requirements here are forms, tables and workflows. Templates carry most of it.
  • Family worries 'low-code' sounds junior. Enterprise platform developers sit on large bank and telecom programmes. The brand names reassure.
  • Short runway. Platform support roles on the same tools tend to hire faster; use one as a stepping stone.
