Field note: "api integration" gets about 4,400 searches a month in India and 2,900 in the US. Job titles vary — "integration engineer", "integrations developer", "platform engineer", "solutions developer". Searching only one title misses most roles.
What the route is
An API integration engineer connects software systems so data moves accurately and on time. Typical work: syncing CRM and billing tools, connecting payment providers to order systems, building connectors for a SaaS product's marketplace, and keeping it all running when one side changes.
The timeline from first step to first role
Weeks 1–2 — Map. List integrations you've touched. Learn the vocabulary: OAuth 2.0, webhooks, pagination, rate limits, idempotency. Weeks 3–4 — Build one proof. A sync between two services with free tiers. Handle retries and duplicates. Write the README. Weeks 5–6 — Add webhooks. A second integration that receives events, verifies signatures and processes them once. Weeks 7–8 — Add a low-code option. Recreate one flow in n8n or Make (both have free starting options, checked 23 Oct 2026). Many clients prefer tools they can maintain. Weeks 9–10 — Outreach. Ten messages to people who run or hire for integrations. Weeks 11–13 — Applications or a paid pilot. Fifteen tailored applications, or one small paid project.
Slow down if you need to. The order matters more than the speed.
India view / Global view
IT services firms run large integration programmes; SaaS product companies build connector teams; agencies connect tools for D2C brands. Enterprise platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi and similar) appear in many listings — see MuleSoft integration.
SaaS companies hire integration engineers, often remote; freelance work covers small business tool syncs. Check each freelance platform's current fees on its own site. Work-authorisation questions are outside our scope.
Status Code Postcards
A small stack of illustrated postcards, one per HTTP status, each "written" from the server's point of view. 429: "Wish you'd slow down. Try again in 30 seconds. Love, the API." 401: "I don't recognise you. Did your token expire?" 503: "Closed for repairs. Not your fault." Flip through seven cards; each ends with the right integration response. A friendly way to remember the codes you'll see daily.

The skills that matter most
- Reading API docs fast — auth, limits, pagination, error shapes.
- Designing for failure — retries, backoff, dead letters, alerts.
- Data mapping — fields rarely line up neatly.
- Security basics — store secrets properly; verify webhook signatures.
- Communication — "the vendor changed their API" needs to be explained calmly to a client.
Who moves into API integration
Backend developers (bridge), PHP developers (role page) and Java developers (role page) move most directly. WordPress developers who've connected forms and CRMs often take the AI automation path first.
Your realistic 90 days
Backend, Java and PHP developers and integration testers arrive here. Businesses need CRMs, payment gateways, WhatsApp and AI APIs stitched together reliably. Your starting artefact is a webhook or third-party integration you built before.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Called one vendor API in app code | Design integrations with retries, idempotency and logs |
| Tested in Postman by hand | Keep Postman collections with tests and environments |
| Debugged with print statements | Trace failures with request IDs and dead-letter queues |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write up an integration you built (which systems, what broke) with no client details | Write-up |
| 2 | Pick 2 public APIs (Razorpay test mode, a weather or GitHub API) | Keys |
| 3 | Build a Postman collection with tests for 6 calls | Collection |
| 4 | Write a small service that receives a webhook and stores it idempotently | Duplicate test passes |
| 5 | Add an AI call that classifies the payload | Classification logged |
| 6 | Add retry with backoff and a failure log | Retry test |
| 7 | Save 8 'integration engineer', 'API developer' postings | 8 links |
Days 1–30: A reliable integration demo
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publish repo + Postman collection + architecture sketch | about 12 hours across 3 weeks | Repo | Collection + service. | Feel free to postpone “publish repo + Postman collection + architecture sketch” when energy returns. |
| Share with 4 ex-colleagues | about 2 hours | 4 sent | Share with 2 ex-colleagues. | Let go of “share with 4 ex-colleagues” till a lighter week. |
Signal by day 30: A backend lead asks how you handled duplicates.
Days 31–60: Platform skills
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do the free Postman API Fundamentals Student Expert path | about 6 hours | Badge | Part. | Leave for later “do the free Postman API Fundamentals Student Expert path”. |
| Apply to 10 integration/API roles | about 5 hours | 10 entries | Apply to 5 integration/API roles. | You can defer “apply to 10 integration/API roles”. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Real system
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build one integration for a small business (form → CRM → WhatsApp alert) | about 10 hours | Live | Prototype. | Skip for now “build one integration for a small business (form → CRM → WhatsApp alert)” for a fortnight. |
| Request a testimonial | about 1 hour | Asked | Skip it. | It is fine to hold “request a testimonial” when energy returns. |
Signal by day 90: A paid job or second round.
Worries people bring to this route
- Do SaaS firms hire older engineers? Integration is reliability work; years of fixing partner breakages are the selling point.
- A gap since the layoff. A dated sync project with retries and a run log answers it.
- No degree from a top college. Product companies lean on a take-home exercise more than college name.
- README English. Integration docs can be terse lists: auth, limits, failure cases.
- Family asks if it's 'real' engineering. It's backend engineering with a sharper brief; the title says engineer.
- Runway. Backend roles accept the same proof; keep both searches going.

A day in integration work, roughly
Morning: a client reports missing orders. The run log shows the payment provider changed a field name overnight. Afternoon: patch the mapping, replay the failed events, write a short note to the client explaining what happened and what you changed so it's caught sooner next time. Much of the job is calm detective work.

Scams to watch
Unpaid "test projects" that are real client work, recruiter fees, and requests for OTPs or UPI PINs. Official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Integration questions from the field
Do I need MuleSoft? Only for MuleSoft-specific roles. General integration work doesn't require it. Will AI write all integrations? AI drafts glue code quickly; ownership of reliability, security and client trust remains human work. Our view.
