Build or Configure
Four requests. Configure it, or does it need code?
Build or Configure
Enterprise low-code developers build business apps on platforms such as ServiceNow, Salesforce and Microsoft Power Platform, mostly by configuring forms, workflows and rules, with some scripting. Business analysts already write the requirements these apps come from. Moving into building means fewer handovers and a clearer, more technical CV.
Quick check: are you ready to build what you specify?
(Takes about a minute; answers stay on your device.)
- Have you written user stories with acceptance criteria? (yes / no)
- Have you drawn process flows for approvals or tickets? (yes / no)
- Have you configured a tool such as Jira workflows? (yes / no)
- Would you enjoy building the thing you specify? (yes / no)
- Can you learn one platform deeply rather than many? (yes / no)
Four or five yeses: this bridge is short for you. Two or three: still reachable. Fewer: start with the business analyst role page and come back.
Proof: an approval app, from stories to demo
Pick one platform and use its free learning or developer access.
- Write requirements for a small approval app, such as a leave or purchase request, with five user stories.
- Build it: a form, a workflow with approval, and a notification.
- Write UAT (user acceptance testing) cases and run them.
- Record a three-minute demo, and write a one-page note on what you configured and what needed code.
The requirements plus a working build show both halves of you.
Write down a baseline first: how the approval works today (email chains, an Excel tracker, how many steps and hand-offs). Your one-page note then shows the before and after side by side. Done when someone who has never seen the app can submit a request and approve it while you watch, without help.
The India picture. Low-code work in India sits mostly with Microsoft, Salesforce and ServiceNow partners, the platform practices at TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Accenture, and in-house teams at global capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Noida. Small businesses that run on Microsoft 365 also hire freelancers for single apps. On Naukri, search the platform name plus "functional consultant" or "developer", not just "low-code".
BA skills that turn into builds
Wrote user stories. In the new role: turn stories directly into forms and flows. Mapped approval processes. In the new role: build approval workflows with rules. Wrote UAT test cases. In the new role: test your own builds before release. Ran requirement workshops. In the new role: demo working screens in the workshop.
The new parts are one platform's data model, its scripting basics (JavaScript for ServiceNow and Salesforce, Power Fx for Power Apps), and release practices.
Your realistic 90 days
You've written the requirements for apps like these for years. On a low-code platform you can build them too. The plan ends with one working approval app, with your stories, tests and a short demo.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
The two worries we hear most about this move
I'm not a developer. Will I cope with the scripting? Most early work is configuration. Scripting comes in small pieces, and the platforms' free learning paths cover it step by step. Do I need an expensive certification? Not to start. Build the app first, then decide using the listings near you. Be wary of paid 'placement guarantee' courses.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.

Days 1–30: A working app
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finish the app, run UAT and record the demo | about 12 hours over 3 weeks | demo + note | Form and workflow only. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Show it to 5 BA or platform contacts | about 2 hours | 5 messages | Show it to 3 BA or platform contacts. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: Someone else submits a request and gets an approval.
Days 31–60: Platform depth
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete the platform's beginner learning path | about 12 hours | path complete | Half. | Bookmark where you stopped. It will still be there next week. |
| Apply to 8 platform developer or functional consultant roles | about 4 hours | 8 logged | Apply to 4 platform developer or functional consultant roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call for a junior platform developer or functional consultant role.
Days 61–90: Certification decision
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Check the platform's entry certification and decide whether to sit it | about 2 hours | decision note | Skim. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Ask 2 contacts in platform teams for referrals | about 1 hour | 2 asks | Just one instead of 2. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 90: A technical round or practical task.

BAs ask about low-code platforms
Which platform should I choose? Check which one appears most in listings near you, and which your past employers used. Will I still use BA skills? Yes. Functional consultant roles mix requirements and configuration.
Training-fee and 'placement' scams
Be careful with "test tasks" that are really unpaid client work, recruiters asking for fees, or anyone asking for OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Platform roles and pay: not verified
We haven't verified pay data for enterprise low-code developer roles. Rates differ by city, company and contract type.
