- Have you turned a business process (approvals, tickets, onboarding) into code? (yes / no)
- Are you comfortable with JavaScript, even if Java is home? (yes / no)
- Do you like seeing your work used by whole departments? (yes / no)
- Can you accept that the platform decides some things for you? (yes / no)
- Would a vendor certification motivate you? (yes / no)
Field notes: "servicenow developer jobs" gets about 2,400 searches a month in India and 1,600 in the US. The broader "servicenow developer" shows 49,500 in India, but much of that is people looking for the company's own sites, so we don't treat it as job demand.
Java work vs platform work
| Java developer | Enterprise low-code developer | |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Java | mostly JavaScript (server and client scripts) plus configuration |
| Data | you design schemas | you extend platform tables |
| Deploy | your pipeline | platform update sets / app repository |
| UI | separate front end | forms and portals from the platform |
| Upgrades | you plan them | the vendor ships releases; you test |
| Stakeholders | product team | IT, HR, operations, service desks |
| Credentials | optional | often expected (vendor certifications) |
The adjustment isn't skill — it's control. You trade some freedom for speed and reach.
How much scripting will you do?
It ranges from "configure only" to "heavy scripting". At the low end you're building with forms, flows and rules — fast, but limited. In the middle (where most jobs sit), you write business rules and script includes. At the high end you build integrations and scoped apps with significant code. Java developers usually feel at home in the middle-to-high range.
Script Include Translator
Paste — or pick — a short Java method, like a service that finds open orders for a customer. A side panel shows a hand-written equivalent in the platform's style (a query loop over a table, then a returned list), with each line linked back to its Java twin by colour. It's a fixed set of five sample pairs, not an AI converter, so every pair has been checked by a person. It helps you see that the logic is the same and the syntax is new.

Getting a free practice environment
ServiceNow's Developer Program has no program fees and gives each member one free Personal Developer Instance (PDI). Note from the docs: it isn't for production use, and it's reclaimed after 10 days of inactivity — log in regularly. Salesforce's equivalent learning route is Trailhead (free). Other enterprise platforms (Pega, Appian, OutSystems, Mendix) have their own developer offers; check each on its official site.
The proof project
On your PDI, build a small scoped app — for example, an equipment-request process:
- A custom table and form.
- An approval workflow.
- One server-side script that applies a business rule.
- Notifications for requester and approver.
- A README or short document with screenshots and a two-minute recorded demo.
That covers the core skills a platform developer is asked about.
A week on a platform team, roughly
Monday: a request from HR to change an onboarding approval step. Tuesday: write and test a business rule; check it doesn't slow the form. Wednesday: a vendor release note mentions a changed API (application programming interface) — you test your scripts in a sub-production instance. Thursday: demo to the HR process owner, who asks for one more field. Friday: document the change and move it through the release process.
It's steady, visible work. People in other departments see what you built, and that can feel very different from back-end services nobody notices until they break.
Habits to unlearn (gently)
Resist building everything in code. On platforms, the out-of-the-box feature is often the right answer because it survives upgrades. Experienced platform developers are proud of how little custom code they write.
What about certifications?
Platform roles often list vendor certifications. ServiceNow's entry certifications and their fees are on its official training site — we didn't verify fees today, so check there. Buy exam vouchers only from the vendor or its listed partners.
Where the jobs are
India: ServiceNow and Salesforce partner firms, IT services companies with large platform practices, and global capability centres. Global: consultancies and partners; remote roles exist, especially for experienced, certified developers. More detail on platform-specific pages is planned.
Your realistic 90 days
You've built internal Java tools — approval screens, admin portals, report pages — that took months and needed a developer for every change. Enterprises now build many of these on Power Apps, ServiceNow or similar, and they want developers who understand data, security and integration underneath. You'll rebuild one internal tool you remember.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Built a leave/expense approval screen in Spring MVC | Build it in Power Apps with Power Automate for approvals |
| Wrote the database schema and access checks | Design Dataverse tables and security roles |
| Integrated with SAP or an HR system via REST | Use connectors or a custom connector to reach the same system |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one internal tool you built; write its screens, data and approvals | A one-page spec |
| 2 | Sign up for the Power Apps Developer Plan (free) or a ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance (free) | Environment ready |
| 3 | Do one Microsoft Learn or ServiceNow Developer module on forms and tables | Module completed |
| 4 | Build the data tables for your tool | Tables with sample rows |
| 5 | Build the main form | You can create and edit a record |
| 6 | Add an approval flow | A test request gets approved by email |
| 7 | Save 10 Power Platform or ServiceNow developer postings | 10 links |
Days 1–30: Your old internal tool, rebuilt
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finish the rebuild with roles (requester, approver, admin) and record a demo | about 14 hours over 3 weeks | Loom showing each role | Requester + approver only. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Message 5 ex-colleagues in IT or ops teams | about 2 hours | 5 messages | Message 2 ex-colleagues in IT or ops teams. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: You can demo it in 5 minutes and someone from your old company recognises the problem.
Days 31–60: Integration and certification path
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Connect the tool to an external API with a custom connector or REST message | about 10 hours | data flows in on test | Use a built-in connector. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Work through the free Microsoft Learn path for PL-200 or the ServiceNow CSA learning path (exam fees are separate) | about 8 hours | half the path done | A quarter. | Bookmark where you stopped. It will still be there next week. |
| Apply to 8 enterprise low code roles | about 4 hours | 8 logged | Apply to 4 roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Interview-ready for enterprise low code roles
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare a comparison: 'how I built this in Java vs. low-code, and when I'd choose each' | about 2 hours | one page | Bullets. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Follow up applications and ask 2 referrals | about 2 hours | done | 1 referral. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 90: A second-round interview.
The two worries we hear most about this move
Will low-code feel like a downgrade from Java? Platforms like ServiceNow and Power Platform still need scripting, integration and design judgement. Your Java habits (clean structure, testing, thinking about scale) are what make low-code systems maintainable. Many enterprises struggle to find people with both. Which platform should I pick? Look at Naukri and LinkedIn for your city and count openings for ServiceNow, Power Platform and others. Pick the one with the most local demand and a free developer instance, and go deep on it.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.
One search that fits your background
The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- GCCs and IT services firms hire Power Platform and ServiceNow developers. Search Naukri and LinkedIn by platform name.
- Your Java background is a plus for custom connectors and integrations. Say so.
- Show role-based demos; enterprise buyers think in permissions.

Platform questions from Java developers
Will I lose my Java skills? Not quickly. Many platform roles involve integrations where Java helps. Which platform first? The one in your local job ads. Search, count, choose. Is it a dead end? Platform specialists can move into architecture, integration or consulting. Our view.
