Your company added an AI assistant to the app. Leadership wants to know if it's working. Someone forwards you a dashboard showing "conversations: up". You suspect that isn't the question.
You're right. More conversations might mean people love it — or that it keeps failing and they keep retrying. Working out which is the job of an AI product analyst: the usual product analysis (funnels, retention, experiments) plus a new layer — reading what the AI said, labelling quality, and tying it back to whether users got what they came for.
You already know half of this. The other half is learnable in a few months of practice.
— A colleague who's read too many chat logs
For honesty on demand: "product analyst" gets about 2,400 searches a month in India and 1,600 in the US; "ai product analyst" about 90 and 50 (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026). The AI-specific title is new; the work often sits under "product analyst".
Thumbs-Down Detective
You get eight fictional chat snippets that each received a thumbs-down. Drag each into a bucket: wrong answer, right answer but too long, couldn't find the feature, user was rude, bot was fine. After sorting, a bar appears showing your buckets — and the punchline: only three were actually the AI's fault. The fix list changes completely. Snippets are invented for practice.

The checklist spine
Work down this list; each item links to a skill-tree node.
Know the product's goal. What should a user be able to do after using the AI feature?
Map the funnel. Opened assistant → asked question → got answer → took the next action. Where do people leave?
Check the tracking. Are the events actually firing? Missing events are the most common surprise.
Sample the logs. Read 50 real conversations. Write down failure types in your own words.
Label consistently. Turn those words into 4–6 labels with definitions. Have someone else label 20 and compare.
Connect quality to outcomes. Do labelled "wrong answer" sessions churn more? That's the insight leadership needs.
Watch cost and speed. Tracing tools show tokens and latency per call; slow or costly answers are product problems too.
Recommend one change. Not ten. One, with the evidence.
Propose a test. How will we know the change helped?

Where people come from
Data analysts bring SQL and dashboards. Business analysts bring requirements and stakeholder skills. Customer support leads bring an instinct for what users actually ask. Each needs to fill the gaps on the tree above. Start from the data analyst page if that's you, or from the business analyst bridge.
Your realistic 90 days
BAs, data analysts and product ops people come here. Product teams shipping AI features need someone to measure whether answers help users. Your starting artefact is a feature analysis or funnel report you made before.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
Worries people bring to this route
- Product teams look young. Analysts who can say 'this metric is lying' are rare at any age. Lead with one call you got right.
- I haven't worked in months. Analyse a public dataset as if it were an AI feature launch; date the write-up.
- Non-engineering degree. Product analytics is open to economics, commerce and stats grads.
- Not confident speaking English. Analyst output is charts and one-paragraph memos. Write tight; speak less.
- Family doesn't get the title. Explain: 'I tell the app team whether their new AI feature actually helps users.'
- Runway. Data analyst roles use the same SQL; apply widely while you aim for product teams.
