Dear person who ran the report every Monday at 9

You knew which branch file would arrive late. You knew that "revenue" meant one number to sales and another to finance, and you quietly fixed it every month. You built the pivot, refreshed the lookup, pasted the commentary, and hit send before the 10 o'clock review.

FromData Analyst / MISToAI-Assisted BI Analyst

Then the job went. Maybe the pack was automated. Maybe the whole team was "restructured". Either way, here is the honest part: what's shrinking is the report production — the same pack, rebuilt on a calendar. What isn't shrinking is the judgement behind it: which metric is right, which source is wrong, and whether a number on screen can be trusted. That judgement is exactly what AI tools need someone to supply.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists data analysts among the fastest-growing roles (WEF, Jan 2025). That's a global outlook, not a promise about your next offer. But it means your field isn't closing; the entry point is moving.

This page works for both data analysts (Excel and SQL) and MIS / reporting analysts. If your title was MIS Executive, MIS Analyst or Reporting Analyst, you're in the right place.

MIS Calendar Shredder

A month calendar appears, filled with your recurring reports — you type their names, or pick from common ones (daily sales, branch collections, ageing, stock, attendance). Each report shows the hours you estimate it took. Then pick a route, and the calendar shows which entries that route would automate, rebuild as a self-serve model, or leave for human judgement. Automated ones get shredded with a soft paper sound. What's left on the calendar is the work that's still yours. Nothing leaves your device, and the hours are only your own estimates.

Start at the top and follow your honest answer.

Start: Do you enjoy writing SQL and want to keep building?

  • Yes → Do you like tests, version control and clean structure?
  • Yes → Analytics Engineer: own the SQL layer that dashboards and AI tools read from.
  • Not really → AI-Assisted BI Analyst: build models and measures in Power BI or Data Studio.
  • No, I'm more of a tool person → Is income urgent (under 30 days)?
  • Yes → Reporting Automation Specialist: automate one recurring report for a small business.
  • No → AI-Assisted BI Analyst is the default.
  • I'd rather work with people and product decisions → AI Product Analyst: define what a "correct" AI answer looks like and track it.

Two more doors, for specific situations:

How much code do you want?

  • None to light: reporting automation or AI-assisted BI.
  • Some SQL: AI-assisted BI or AI product analyst.
  • Daily SQL and Git: analytics engineering.

It's a starting suggestion, not a decision.

The four routes in one table

Route Best if you… Learn time (est.) Main tools
AI-Assisted BI Analyst love Excel and want the next step 3–5 weeks Power BI, DAX (the Power BI formula language), Power Query, Data Studio
Analytics Engineer enjoy SQL and order 5–8 weeks SQL, dbt Core, Git
Reporting Automation want income soonest 2–4 weeks Power Automate, Apps Script, n8n or Make
AI Product Analyst like people and product questions 3–4 weeks SQL, Sheets, PostHog or GA4, an LLM (large language model) playground

Learn times are our estimates from an Excel/MIS base, not promises.

Tools you can actually open today (checked 24 Oct 2026)

  • Power BI. Microsoft's free per-user licence lets you build reports for your own use; sharing needs a paid licence (Microsoft Learn). Copilot in Power BI needs paid Fabric (F2 or higher) or Premium (P1 or higher) capacity — trial and free SKUs aren't supported (Microsoft Learn). So you can learn the modelling for free; the Copilot part you'll meet at an employer.
  • Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio). Google renamed it in April 2026; creating and viewing is free (Google Cloud).
  • BigQuery sandbox. Query public data without a credit card; tables expire after 60 days (Google Cloud docs).
  • dbt (a SQL modelling tool) Core. Open source under Apache-2.0 (GitHub). dbt's hosted platform also lists a free single-developer plan (dbt pricing).
  • Certification, optional: Microsoft's PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst Associate, renewed every 12 months (Microsoft Learn). Helpful on Indian job boards; a proof project matters more.

Your 30/60/90 quests

Paused. Nothing is lost — life happens. Resume whenever you're ready.

Every route starts from a station you already know.

Your realistic 90 days

You lived in Excel and maybe Power BI or SQL — MIS reports, daily dashboards, VLOOKUP marathons, the 9 am report the boss read first. AI now drafts formulas and summaries, so the value is in automating the routine and explaining what changed. This plan tests five routes on reports you already made.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • Analyst at 40+. Knowing which number matters comes from years.
  • A gap. A dated public dashboard answers it.
  • B.Com only. Common in analytics and MIS.
  • English. Charts and short notes carry it.
  • Family. Data roles sit in every industry.
  • Runway. MIS roles hire steadily.

What AI changed in your old tasks

You used to… Now you…
Built the same Excel MIS every morning Automate it so it refreshes and sends itself
Wrote commentary by hand Draft commentary with AI, then check every number
Copied data from PDFs into Excel Extract it with document AI and validate

Fake "data job" offers

Watch for "data entry from home" offers that ask for a registration fee, or "analytics internships" that want payment for a certificate. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Is data analyst a good career now?

Is data analyst a good career? WEF's 2025 report lists it among the fastest-growing roles globally. The work is shifting from producing reports to defining, checking and modelling data — which suits experienced analysts.

Will AI replace data analysts? AI is taking over repeat report production. Someone still has to decide which number is right and check what the AI says. We can't promise how any single employer will choose.

Is MIS still a job title? Yes, in India "MIS executive jobs" alone gets about 5,400 searches a month. The work inside the title is changing.
