If that's you: congratulations, you may already be one. The job is turning raw tables into clean, tested, documented models so that every dashboard, and every AI tool sitting on top, gets the same answer.
⏱Fresh or Stale?
Six dashboard tiles flash on screen, each with a tiny "last loaded" timestamp and a source table. You have ten seconds per tile to tap Fresh or Stale. The trick: one tile looks fine but its upstream table stopped loading three days ago. When you miss it, a cartoon CFO appears holding a printout — then the page shows the one-line freshness test that would have caught it. Fictional data; the lesson is real.
Fresh or stale?
Interview with yourself
"What does an analytics engineer actually do all day?" Writes SQL that builds tables from other tables. Adds tests ("this ID is never blank", "every order has a customer"). Writes descriptions. Reviews other people's changes. Answers "why doesn't this number match?" — a lot.
"Is it just data engineering with a new name?" Not quite. Data engineers usually move data into the warehouse and manage pipelines. Analytics engineers shape it once it's there, closer to the business questions. Lines blur in small teams.
"Do I need Python?" Helpful but not the core. SQL, a version-control habit (Git) and a modelling tool like dbt (a SQL modelling tool) matter more for most listings (observation from reading listings; check your own city).
"Can I learn it without paying?" Yes. dbt Core is open source under Apache-2.0. dbt's free Developer plan gives one seat, one project and up to 3,000 successful models built per month (dbt pricing, checked 24 Oct 2026). The BigQuery sandbox needs no credit card; its tables expire after 60 days (Google Cloud docs, checked 24 Oct 2026).
"How is this AI-related?" AI assistants that answer questions from company data are only as good as the models under them. Clean, documented models are what make those answers checkable. You're building the floor the AI stands on.
"Will I hate it?" If you like puzzles where the answer is "the join was wrong", you'll enjoy it. If you want to present to leadership daily, pair it with BI work or look at the AI-assisted BI analyst route.

Building your first portfolio project
Pick a public dataset (a city's open data portal, or a public BigQuery dataset). Load it, build staging models, then two or three final models answering a clear question. Add tests on keys and freshness. Publish the repo with a README describing grain, assumptions and one bug your tests caught. That last line is what reviewers remember.
Analytics engineer pay
We haven't verified pay data for this title. Compare current listings in your city.
Fake data-job offers
Be cautious of "analytics engineer — pay a training fee to join" offers and anyone asking for payment over personal UPI. Real employers don't charge you to start. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Your realistic 90 days
Data analysts, SQL developers and BI engineers come here. Analytics engineers build tested, documented data models that dashboards and AI tools rely on. Your starting artefact is a messy SQL query you maintained for a recurring report.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Kept one long SQL query per report | Split it into staged, reusable dbt models |
| Checked numbers by eye | Write dbt tests for nulls, uniqueness and relationships |
| Explained columns over chat | Publish dbt docs with descriptions |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rewrite a recurring-report query you knew (public data, no employer schema) | Query |
| 2 | Set up BigQuery sandbox and load a public dataset | Tables |
| 3 | Install dbt Core and connect | dbt debug passes |
| 4 | Split your query into staging and mart models | 3+ models |
| 5 | Add 5 tests | dbt test green |
| 6 | Generate docs | Docs site |
| 7 | Save 8 'analytics engineer', 'dbt' postings | 8 links |
Days 1–30: A tested dbt project
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publish repo + docs screenshot + lineage graph | about 14 hours across 3 weeks | Repo link | 2 models. | Feel free to postpone “publish repo + docs screenshot + lineage graph” when energy returns. |
| Post a 'from one query to models' write-up on LinkedIn | about 2 hours | Post | Comment on 3 posts. | Set aside “post a 'from one query to models' write-up on LinkedIn” once applications are out. |
Signal by day 30: A data engineer gives you feedback.
Days 31–60: Incremental and CI
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add an incremental model and a GitHub Action that runs dbt build | about 8 hours | Green action | Incremental only. | OK to shelve “add an incremental model and a GitHub Action that runs dbt build” for a fortnight. |
| Apply to 8 analytics engineer roles | about 4 hours | 8 apps | Apply to 4 analytics engineer roles. | Skip for now “apply to 8 analytics engineer roles”. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Free certification
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete dbt Learn's free 'dbt Fundamentals' course | about 6 hours | Badge | Half. | It is fine to hold “complete dbt Learn's free 'dbt Fundamentals' course” till a lighter week. |
| Ask 2 data leads for referrals | about 1 hour | 2 asks | Ask 1 data lead for referrals. | Let go of “ask 2 data leads for referrals” when energy returns. |
Signal by day 90: A technical interview.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'analytics engineer', 'dbt', 'data modeller' on LinkedIn and Instahyre.
- Lineage graphs and tests impress more than dashboards here.
- Bengaluru SaaS firms and GCCs hire most.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
Product companies, fintechs and data consultancies. LinkedIn and Instahyre carry 'analytics engineer' and 'dbt developer' posts; Naukri lists many under 'data engineer'.
- LinkedIn search string:
("analytics engineer" OR "dbt developer" OR "data modeler") AND (SQL OR dbt OR BigQuery OR Snowflake) - Naukri / foundit keywords: analytics engineer, dbt, data modelling SQL, BigQuery
Worries people bring to this route
- Is 40 too late for the modern data stack? Modelling rewards people who have watched numbers go wrong in a board meeting. That's experience, not age.
- A gap on my CV. A public dbt project with tests, docs and dated commits closes the question.
- No CS degree. Analytics engineering grew out of analyst roles; SQL depth matters more in listings we read.
- Writing docs in English. dbt docs are one-line descriptions per model and column. Short is better.
- Family wants a known job title. On Naukri the same work is often titled 'data engineer'. Use that word at home.
- Savings are running down. Senior data analyst roles accept the same project; apply to both.

Is dbt certification required? Not that we've seen as a hard rule; a public project usually says more. Check listings.
