That somebody is an AI-assisted BI analyst. The title on job boards is usually plainer — Power BI Developer, BI Analyst, Reporting & Insights Analyst — but the work increasingly includes making AI features answer correctly. "Power BI dashboard" alone gets about 18,100 searches a month in India and 8,100 in the US (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026), and "Power BI jobs" around 4,400 and 1,900.
Myth: you need a computer science degree. Reality: most people in this route come from Excel and reporting. Power Query, which many MIS analysts already use, is built into Power BI.
Myth: you need Copilot at home to learn this. Reality: Copilot in Power BI needs paid organisational capacity (more below). The modelling skills underneath can be learned free.
Which Revenue?
Three cartoon colleagues — Sales, Finance, Operations — each hold up a different "Revenue" number for the same month. Tap each to see why: one includes returns, one is after discounts, one counts orders not yet delivered. Then you write one clear measure name and description for each ("Gross Order Value", "Net Revenue after Returns"). An AI chat bubble then answers "What was revenue last month?" — first confused, then correct once your names exist. It's the whole route in one minute. Numbers are invented.
Three revenues, one month
Field guide to the work
The semantic model What it is: the tables, relationships and measures behind a report. Why it matters: AI features read it to answer questions. Signs it's good: clear names, one fact table per process, no mystery columns.
Measures and descriptions What it is: calculations (DAX (the Power BI formula language) in Power BI, calculated fields in Data Studio) plus a sentence explaining each. Why it matters: "Revenue" means three things until you define it. Signs it's good: a new colleague can read the list and pick the right one.
AI answer checks What it is: asking the AI feature real business questions and comparing with correct answers. Why it matters: it's the only way to know whether people can trust it. Signs it's good: a simple log — question, AI answer, correct answer, fix.
Access and versions What it is: who sees which data, and which report is the official one. Why it matters: AI can surface data people shouldn't see if permissions are sloppy. Signs it's good: row-level security where needed; one certified dataset.
Explaining to people What it is: short notes and walkthroughs for managers. Why it matters: adoption fails when nobody understands the dashboard.
How comfortable are you with formulas?
At Excel formulas only, start with Data Studio with Sheets and simple calculated fields. At comfortable with Power Query, try Power BI with basic measures. At I enjoy DAX or SQL, go for Power BI with a star schema and row-level security, and a nudge toward the analytics engineer route.
Requirements, checked 24 Oct 2026
- Copilot in Power BI: Microsoft lists paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher); trial capacities and free SKUs aren't supported, and a Pro or PPU licence alone isn't enough (Microsoft Learn).
- Power BI free licence: build reports for your own use; sharing and collaboration need Pro, PPU or capacity (Microsoft Learn).
- Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio): free for creators and viewers (Google Cloud).
- Optional certification: PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst Associate, renewed yearly (Microsoft Learn).
A starter proof
Rebuild a typical monthly sales pack from a public sample dataset as a star schema with 15 documented measures. Ask 25 plain-English questions to whatever AI assistant you can reach — built-in Q&A, or a chat tool given only your table and measure list. Publish a table of question, AI answer, correct answer and fix. That one table shows both halves of the job.
Who tends to enjoy BI work
People who liked making numbers trustworthy more than making slides pretty. Often MIS executives, reporting analysts and Excel power users. If you'd rather keep writing SQL all day, look at analytics engineering. If you'd rather work on AI products themselves, see AI product analyst.
Your realistic 90 days
MIS executives, data analysts and BAs who built reports managers read land here. Power BI Copilot and Looker Studio's Gemini features now draft visuals and summaries — and get numbers wrong. Your starting artefact is a monthly report you produced by hand; you'll rebuild it as a model whose AI answers you've checked.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Refreshed the same Excel pivot every Monday | Build a data model once with named measures |
| Wrote the commentary paragraph yourself | Edit an AI draft and verify each figure against the measure |
| Answered 'which number is right?' calls | Publish a definitions page next to the dashboard |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recreate the structure of a monthly MIS report you made (fake or public data, no employer figures) | Sheet with the same columns |
| 2 | Load a public sales dataset (e.g. Kaggle superstore) into Power BI Desktop (free) or Looker Studio | Data loaded |
| 3 | Build a star model: fact table plus date and product dimensions | Relationships view screenshot |
| 4 | Write 6 measures your old manager asked for (MoM growth, top 10, margin) | 6 measures |
| 5 | Ask the built-in AI 10 business questions; check each against your measures | Right/wrong table |
| 6 | Write a definitions tab for every measure | Tab done |
| 7 | Save 8 BI postings and note which tool each asks for | 8 rows with tool column |
Days 1–30: A dashboard you can defend
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publish the dashboard (Power BI file or Looker link) with the AI-accuracy table | about 12 hours across 3 weeks | Link + 2-minute Loom | Skip the AI table. | Skip for now “publish the dashboard (Power BI file or Looker link) with the AI-accuracy table” for a fortnight. |
| Send to 4 managers you reported to: 'Would this have saved you the Monday call?' | about 2 hours | 4 messages | Send to 2 managers you reported to: 'Would this have saved you the Monday call?'. | Feel free to postpone “send to 4 managers you reported to: 'Would this have saved you the Monday call?'” when energy returns. |
Signal by day 30: A non-analyst reads it without asking you anything.
Days 31–60: SQL under the visuals
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rewrite your 6 measures as SQL in the BigQuery sandbox (free, no card) | about 8 hours | 6 queries saved | 3 queries. | OK to shelve “rewrite your 6 measures as SQL in the BigQuery sandbox (free, no card)” until next month. |
| Apply to 10 BI/MIS roles that mention Power BI or Looker | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Apply to 5 BI/MIS roles that mention Power BI or Looker. | Feel free to postpone “apply to 10 BI/MIS roles that mention Power BI or Looker” until next month. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Exam or interview round
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Work through the free Microsoft Learn PL-300 path (exam fee separate; only book if postings ask for it) | about 10 hours | Half the path done | One learning path module. | You can defer “work through the free Microsoft Learn PL-300 path (exam fee separate; only book if postings ask for it)”. |
| Follow up every application older than 2 weeks with your dashboard link | about 2 hours | Follow-ups sent | Top 3. | Feel free to postpone “follow up every application older than 2 weeks with your dashboard link” until next month. |
Signal by day 90: A second-round interview.
Worries people bring to this route
- Over 40 and competing with freshers? Freshers know the tool; you know which number the sales head actually asks for. Show one dashboard that answers a real question.
- A gap on my CV. Publish a Power BI report on public data and date it. It answers 'what have you been doing?' in one link.
- Only a B.Com. Common in MIS and BI teams. Pair it with the free Microsoft Learn PL-300 path; the exam itself is paid.
- I avoid speaking in meetings. BI work is shown, not told. A three-line summary above each chart does most of the talking.
- Family wants a government job instead. Many PSU banks and public bodies also run MIS teams; this skill travels to both.
- Few months of savings left. MIS executive roles are a quicker landing than BI analyst; take one and build up.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
Retail, NBFCs, pharma distributors and D2C brands hire BI analysts across Mumbai, Gurugram and Bengaluru. Naukri carries the bulk of mid-level posts; LinkedIn and Instahyre add product companies.
- LinkedIn search string:
("Power BI" OR Tableau OR Looker) AND ("BI analyst" OR "MIS analyst" OR "reporting analyst") AND (AI OR Copilot) - Naukri / foundit keywords: Power BI developer, BI analyst, MIS analyst Power BI, DAX
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'Power BI developer', 'MIS analyst Power BI', 'Looker Studio' on Naukri — many are in BFSI and pharma.
- Show the right/wrong table: catching AI errors is the skill now.
- Use public data only; never upload an old employer's numbers.

Placement-guarantee course traps
Be wary of "Power BI + guaranteed job" courses that take fees through personal UPI IDs. Microsoft exams are booked on Microsoft's own site. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
AI-assisted BI questions
Power BI or Data Studio first? Check local listings; in many Indian listings Power BI appears often (observation). Concepts transfer either way.
Will AI take this job too? It's absorbing chart-making. Defining and checking numbers is the part that grows in importance.
