Arjun's chatbot passed every demo — then a customer asked about refunds

The team had tried twenty questions by hand and the answers looked great. In week one live, a customer asked about refunds for a cancelled order, and the bot confidently quoted a policy that didn't exist. Nobody had tested refund questions. Arjun, a tester on the team, wrote 40 of them that weekend, found six more failures, and added the set to the release checklist. Six months later, "make sure Arjun's eval passes" was a sentence managers said.

FromMy old roleToLLM Evaluation Engineer

That's LLM (large language model) evaluation: deciding what "good" means and checking it systematically. "llm evaluation" is searched about 720 times a month in India and 1,000 in the US — a young field.

Field guide: what you'll encounter

  • The confident wrong answer. Fluent, plausible, false. Approach: faithfulness checks against sources.
  • The over-cautious refusal. "I can't help with that" for a harmless question. Approach: include should-answer cases, not only should-refuse ones.
  • The silent regression. A prompt tweak fixes one thing and breaks three. Approach: run the full suite on every change.
  • The flattering judge. An AI grader that prefers long answers. Approach: human spot-checks and clearer rubrics.
  • The "it worked in the demo" stakeholder. Approach: show examples, not only averages.

Five-Answer Golden Set

You get one question and five AI answers. Rank them best to worst, and write one line on why the top answer wins. The page turns your ranking into a tiny golden-set entry — question, expected answer, notes — formatted the way real eval files look, with a gold medal on your chosen answer. Then it reveals how three reviewers ranked the same five, so you see where judgement varies. Stored on your device only.

Why outputs vary, and what that means for testing

Ask a language model the same question twice and you may get two different answers. That's why evaluation looks different from classic testing. Instead of one pass or fail, you run each case several times or across many cases and report rates: "correct in 46 of 50", "refused wrongly in 2". You also keep the model version, prompt and settings with every result, so a change can be traced. This habit of recording context is what separates a reliable evaluator from someone running ad-hoc checks.

Backgrounds that fit evaluation

Python developers (see the bridge), QA and test engineers (see the automation-tester bridge), and content reviewers with careful judgement. Writing clearly matters as much as coding.

A first project

Pick a public FAQ, build or borrow a small Q&A bot over it, write 30 questions (including ten that should be refused), run one framework, spot-check ten judge scores, change one setting and report before vs after in a one-page note.

A good eval report, in four parts

  1. The decision: "Safe to ship" or "Hold".
  2. A small metric table.
  3. Three wins and three failures, with examples.
  4. What to test next.

Evaluation hiring in India and globally

India: AI start-ups, IT services firms running GenAI pilots, and quality teams in larger companies. Titles vary — "AI QA", "GenAI test engineer". Global: AI labs and product teams; contract rating work exists, with terms that vary widely — read them carefully. Visa questions are outside our scope.

Your realistic 90 days

QA automation engineers, data scientists and backend developers come here. LLM eval engineers build test sets and automated checks that tell a team whether a model change made things better. Your starting artefact is an automated test suite or metrics pipeline you built.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • Is evaluation a young field for young people? It's test discipline plus code. Years of writing good assertions transfer directly.
  • A gap since my last job. A public eval harness with dated result tables shows exactly what you can do now.
  • No ML degree. You test models; you don't train them. Listings we read stressed Python and testing.
  • English. A results table and three-line finding per failure carry the message.
  • Family asks if this is 'real AI'. It's the checking every AI company needs before launch.
  • Money. QA automation roles share the skills; apply there too.
