"java developer jobs" still sees about 6,600 searches a month in India and 1,900 in the US. Nearby, "servicenow developer jobs" shows 2,400 in India, "mulesoft developer" 1,600, and "site reliability engineer jobs" 1,000 in India and 1,900 in the US. Interest, not guarantees — but real signals.
Take a breath. You're not starting over. You're choosing which part of your experience to put first.
Four path cards for Java developers
Enterprise low-code (ServiceNow and similar) What: build workflows and apps on enterprise platforms using scripting and configuration. Why you: JavaScript-based server scripting, data models, and enterprise process thinking. First step: join the ServiceNow Developer Program — membership has no fee and includes a free Personal Developer Instance (not for production; reclaimed after 10 days of inactivity). Search: "servicenow developer jobs" 2,400 IN / 1,600 US. → Java → enterprise low-code
MuleSoft integration What: connect enterprise systems with APIs and flows on Anypoint Platform. Why you: integration patterns, JVM debugging, enterprise data. First step: MuleSoft's 30-day free trial (no credit card, checked 23 Oct 2026) and Trailhead projects. Credential: Salesforce Certified MuleSoft Developer (Mule-Dev-201), a paid exam; check the current fee on Salesforce's certification site. → Java → MuleSoft
Java modernisation What: move older Java apps to supported versions, frameworks and cloud setups. Why you: you know the old code and its habits. First step: try OpenRewrite, an open-source tool for automated large-scale refactoring, on a sample project. → Java → modernisation
SRE (site reliability engineering) and production support What: keep systems reliable — monitoring, incidents, automation. Why you: if you've done L2/L3 support or on-call, you've started. First step: Google's SRE books are free to read online. → SRE route
Skill-Swap Meter
Pairs of sliders, one per route: "hours of new learning" against "hours of reused Java skill" for a typical first proof. Modernisation tips heavily towards reuse; low-code towards new learning; MuleSoft and SRE sit in between. Drag them to match your own sense, and the meter suggests which card to try first. Hours only — never money. Your settings stay on your device.

Java hiring: India view / Global view
IT services firms run large ServiceNow, MuleSoft and modernisation practices; global capability centres (GCCs) hire for SRE and platform roles; banking and insurance remain big Java employers.
platform consultancies and partners hire certified specialists; modernisation work often comes through consulting firms; SRE roles are common but competitive. Work-authorisation questions are outside our scope.
Choosing kindly
- Want the fastest path to familiar work? Modernisation.
- Want a broad job pool in India? Enterprise low-code or MuleSoft.
- Enjoy calm problem-solving under pressure? SRE.
- Unsure? Do one week-one quest from two cards and notice which felt lighter.
A note on Java versions
Oracle's roadmap (updated 20 Oct 2026) lists 8, 11, 17, 21 and 25 as LTS releases, with Java 29 planned as the next LTS in September 2027. Knowing which versions are still supported helps in modernisation conversations. Licensing decisions belong to each employer's legal team — we don't advise on them.
Java routes by seniority
Early career (0–3 years): low-code or MuleSoft give clear learning paths and certifications. Mid (4–9): any card; modernisation rewards your codebase memory. Senior (10+): modernisation leadership and SRE value judgement and calm.
Your realistic 90 days
You worked on Java systems that big organisations run on — Spring Boot services, batch jobs, maybe a monolith on Java 8 that everyone's scared to touch. Those systems aren't going away, and modernising and integrating them is steady work. This plan tests three routes on code patterns you already know.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Maintained Java 8 services nobody wanted to upgrade | Lead upgrades with tools like OpenRewrite, and use AI assistants carefully |
| Wrote point-to-point integrations between internal systems | Build them on an integration platform such as MuleSoft |
| Wrote custom internal screens in Java | Deliver them on low-code platforms like Power Apps or ServiceNow |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | List the Java versions, frameworks and integrations you worked on | A list |
| 2 | Modernisation try-out: run an OpenRewrite recipe on a small open-source Java 8 project | A diff produced |
| 3 | MuleSoft try-out: start a free Trailhead or MuleSoft trial module | One module done |
| 4 | Low-code try-out: build one form app in Power Apps' developer plan | App runs |
| 5 | Score each on enjoyment and postings seen on Naukri | Scores |
| 6 | Pick one; rewrite your headline | Saved |
| 7 | Save 10 postings | 10 links |
Days 1–30: First proof in the chosen route
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build the first proof using a pattern from your past Java work (an upgrade, an integration, or an internal form) | about 12 hours over 3 weeks | repo or recording with a README | A write-up only. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Message 5 ex-colleagues at service companies or GCCs | about 2 hours | 5 messages | Message 2 ex-colleagues at service companies or GCCs. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: A recruiter or ex-colleague responds to your new headline.
Days 31–60: Certification-ready or second proof
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build a second proof or finish the platform's free learning path | about 12 hours | second proof or path badge | Half the path. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Apply to 10 roles where your java developer years count | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Apply to 5 roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Interviews
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare 3 STAR stories from your Java years reframed for the new route | about 2 hours | 3 stories written | 1 story. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Follow up all applications | about 2 hours | done | Top 3. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 90: A second-round interview.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Service companies and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India hire for Java modernisation, MuleSoft and low-code. Search Naukri and LinkedIn.
- Your domain knowledge (banking, insurance, telecom) matters. Put it in the headline.
- Ex-colleagues inside GCCs are your best referral route.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
IT services majors, banks, insurers and GCCs. Naukri carries the largest share of Java roles; LinkedIn adds GCCs and product firms.
- LinkedIn search string:
(Java OR "Spring Boot") AND (MuleSoft OR ServiceNow OR modernization OR migration) - Naukri / foundit keywords: Java developer, Spring Boot, Java migration, MuleSoft
Worries people bring to this route
- Java and 40+. Enterprise Java estates need seniors who understand them; that is this page's three routes.
- A gap. An upgraded public Java project with a dated diff answers it.
- Degree. Services firms often use skills tests.
- English. Specs and migration plans are structured.
- Family worries Java is old. Banks still run on it and need it modernised.
- Runway. Standard Java roles remain open while you specialise.

Scams Java developers see
"Guaranteed placement" ServiceNow or MuleSoft courses, fake "certification vouchers" from unofficial sellers, and recruiters asking for fees, OTPs or UPI PINs. Buy exams only through official vendor sites. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Questions Java developers ask
Should I switch to Python? Not necessary for these routes. Python helps for data and AI work; see Python developer. Is low-code "real" development? Yes — platform roles involve scripting, data modelling and integration. Is a certification required? Often helpful for platform roles; proof projects still matter.
