9:00 — Stand-up with a client team. Their payment provider's webhooks are arriving twice. You already know why: no idempotency key. You say so kindly. 10:30 — Write the fix and a test that replays the same event three times. 12:00 — Lunch. Actual lunch. 13:30 — Review a batch of AI-generated Python functions for a code-training project. Two have off-by-one errors. One quietly swallows exceptions. You write clear notes. 15:00 — Sketch how an AI agent should call three internal tools safely: what it may do alone, and what needs a human click. 17:00 — Push, update the README, close the laptop.
Every task there is backend work. The titles around it have changed. "backend developer jobs" still gets about 1,300 searches a month in India and 480 in the US — but searches like "api integration" (4,400 India) and "forward deployed engineer" (22,200 in each country) show where adjacent demand is gathering.
Four routes compared
| API integration engineer | AI agent engineer | AI code trainer | Forward deployed engineer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core work | connecting systems reliably | giving AI models tools, memory and guardrails | reviewing and improving AI-written code | building solutions alongside customers |
| Code amount | high | high | medium (mostly reading) | high, plus people time |
| Customer contact | some | some | little | a lot |
| Fastest proof | a sync between two real APIs | a small agent with 2–3 safe tools | a sample review with a rubric | a recorded demo solving a real workflow |
| Work shape | salaried or freelance | salaried, some contract | often project-based, uneven | salaried, travel possible |
| Search interest (IN/US) | "api integration" 4,400/2,900 | "ai agent engineer" 110/210 | "ai training jobs" 5,400/18,100 | 22,200/22,200 |
Plain advice: if you want steady work soon, API (application programming interface) integration has the widest door. If you want to stretch, agents. If you need flexible hours while you search, code training — with care about platforms. If you like people as much as code, forward deployed.

How much code do you want to write?
- Mostly reading and talking: start with AI code trainer or forward deployed engineer.
- A mix: API integration engineer.
- Mostly building: AI agent engineer, with API integration as a close second.
Nothing is ruled out; this just suggests where to start.
What transfers without translation
| Backend skill | Where it lands |
|---|---|
| HTTP, auth, rate limits | every integration |
| Queues, retries, idempotency | integrations and agents |
| Logging and debugging | agents (traces), production support |
| Code review | AI code training |
| Data modelling | integrations, data products |
| Explaining trade-offs | forward deployed, solutions work |
What you'll want to add
- Agents: how tool calling works, prompt structure, evaluation basics. MCP's site describes it as an open protocol for connecting models to tools and data.
- Integrations: a few common SaaS APIs (CRM, payments, messaging) and an automation tool. Postman's free plan is enough to start.
- Code training: writing crisp explanations and rubrics.
- Forward deployed: discovery conversations and demos.
Pathmaker crest
Finish your Day 30 quest and a small crest appears on your Path Card — a simple shield built from the routes you've explored, with one stripe per completed week-one quest. It's stored on your device only and never shared unless you choose. A quiet marker that you've started, not a reward for anything you lost.
Your quiet crest
By experience level
Early career: API integration — clear proof, many small clients. Mid-level: any route; agents reward curiosity. Senior: forward deployed and agent architecture often value judgement over speed.
Hiring patterns in India and elsewhere
India: IT services firms, SaaS product companies and startups all need integration and AI work; many roles still carry a "backend" title with AI responsibilities inside. Global: remote contract work exists but competition is strong. Code-training platforms have region rules — some aren't open to India-based people. Check each platform's own eligibility page. Visa and tax questions are outside our scope.
Money talk, honestly
We haven't verified pay data for these routes. Code-training rates in particular vary by platform, region and project; treat any figure you see online with caution.
Your realistic 90 days
You built APIs, queues, database schemas and the integrations other teams depended on. AI services are just another dependency to integrate, but they fail in new ways. This plan tests three routes — agent engineering, API integration, and AI code training — using services you already designed.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Designed REST endpoints and their error codes | Design tools an AI agent can call safely, with the same care for errors |
| Integrated payment, SMS and ERP APIs | Integrate AI and SaaS APIs with retries, idempotency and logs |
| Reviewed juniors' pull requests | Review and rate AI-written code (a paid task type on some platforms) |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | List 5 services you built: what they did, what broke, who called them | 5 rows |
| 2 | Agent try-out: expose one of those endpoints (rebuilt, no client code) as a tool to an AI model via the Model Context Protocol quickstart | A model calls it |
| 3 | Integration try-out: connect two free APIs with retries and a dead-letter log | A forced failure is logged |
| 4 | Code-trainer try-out: review an AI-generated function and write a rated critique | Critique written |
| 5 | Score each on enjoyment and on postings seen | Scores |
| 6 | Pick one; rewrite your headline | Saved |
| 7 | Save 10 matching postings | 10 links |
Days 1–30: One proof that looks like your old services
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build the proof for your chosen route from one of your 5 services | about 12 hours over 3 weeks | repo with README and a recorded run | README + diagram only. | Save or commit what works now and stop adding. A finished small version beats an unfinished big one. |
| Message 5 ex-colleagues and 1 old tech lead | about 2 hours | 6 messages | Message 2 ex-colleagues and 1 old tech lead. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: A recruiter or ex-colleague asks for a call.
Days 31–60: Second proof, real applications
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add a second proof that handles failure (timeouts, bad input, rate limits) | about 10 hours | failure tests pass | Add tests to the first. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Apply to 10 roles for that route | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Apply to 5 roles for that route. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call or a platform qualification test passed.
Days 61–90: Narrow and deepen
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise a 10-minute system-design walk-through of your proof | about 2 hours | recorded once | Write it out. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Follow up every application; ask each replying ex-colleague for one referral | about 3 hours | done | Top 3. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 90: A second-round interview or first paid task.
Worries people bring to this route
- Over 40 in backend? Reliability and debugging judgement are what AI-era systems lack.
- A gap. A dated service with tests and a run log answers it.
- Degree filters. Product companies lean on take-homes.
- English. Design docs can be bullet lists and diagrams.
- Family wants a big-company badge. GCCs and SaaS firms hire for the same skills.
- Runway. Contract backend work can bridge.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
Product companies, SaaS firms and GCCs. LinkedIn, Instahyre and Cutshort carry many backend posts; Naukri carries services roles.
- LinkedIn search string:
("backend developer" OR "backend engineer") AND (integration OR "AI agent" OR SRE OR API) - Naukri / foundit keywords: backend developer, API developer, Node.js, Java Spring Boot
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'AI agent engineer', 'integration engineer', 'backend + LLM (large language model)' on LinkedIn, Naukri and Instahyre.
- Ex-colleagues who moved to product companies are your best referrers.
- Show failure handling. That's what separates backend people from demo builders.

Scams aimed at developers
Fake "AI training" jobs asking for registration fees, "assessment" sites that harvest ID documents, and offers that want OTPs or UPI PINs. Legitimate platforms don't charge you to work. Official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Questions backend developers bring
Is backend dying? No. Some routine CRUD work is automated; the systems around AI need more careful backend thinking, not less. Our view. Should I learn Python if I use Java or Node? Helpful for agents and data, not required for integrations. Is code training a real career? For some it's a bridge; for others ongoing work. Treat income as uncertain.
