Are you the one who reads the logs first?
(Takes about a minute; answers stay on your device.)
- Have you read a stack trace from production logs? (yes / no)
- Have you taken a thread dump or heap dump? (yes / no)
- Have you joined a late-night incident call? (yes / no)
- Do you like finding causes more than adding features? (yes / no)
- Can you stay calm while people wait on you? (yes / no)
Four or five yeses: this bridge is short for you. Two or three: still reachable. Fewer: start with the java developer role page and come back.
Site reliability engineering (SRE) keeps services running: monitoring, alerting, responding to incidents and fixing the causes so they don't come back. Production support is the hands-on version, often closer to tickets and runbooks. Java developers bring something support teams value: they can read the code and JVM behaviour (memory, threads, garbage collection) behind the error.
Java know-how that support teams want
| You already do | What it becomes |
|---|---|
| Read stack traces | Diagnose production incidents quickly |
| Tuned JVM memory | Spot memory leaks and GC pauses in metrics |
| Used Spring Boot Actuator | Expose health checks and metrics |
| Wrote batch jobs | Automate routine support tasks |
The new parts are metrics and alerts, on-call routines, runbooks and blameless incident notes. Linux basics and one cloud platform also come up in most listings.
Your proof: a Java service you break and fix
Use a small Spring Boot service.
- Add Micrometer metrics and scrape them with Prometheus; build one dashboard.
- Set two alerts: error rate and slow responses.
- Cause a problem on purpose, such as a memory leak or a slow database call, and diagnose it with metrics and a thread dump.
- Write a runbook and a one-page blameless incident note with a timeline.
Read a chapter of the free Google SRE book alongside each step.
Record a baseline before you break anything: normal p95 response time and error rate from your dashboard. Your incident note then shows before and after numbers for the same service, which is what an on-call interviewer will ask about. Done when a friend can follow your runbook and bring the service back without asking you a question.
The India picture. Production support and SRE roles in India are spread across IT services firms (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech), global capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, and product startups. On Naukri, search "production support engineer Java", "application support L2" and "site reliability engineer" separately, because many teams still post under the older support titles. Shift and on-call patterns vary a lot between employers; ask about them in the first call, not after the offer.

SRE and support pay: not verified
We haven't verified pay data for sre / production support roles. Rates differ by city, company and contract type.
Avoid fake job offers
Be careful with "test tasks" that are really unpaid client work, recruiters asking for fees, or anyone asking for OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Your realistic 90 days
When a Java service slows down, someone has to read the thread dump and find the cause. You can already do that. This plan adds the monitoring, alerting and incident-writing habits that turn it into an SRE or support role.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
The two worries we hear most about this move
Is production support a step backwards from development? It can be framed that way, but Java depth is rare in support teams and valued. Use it as a way in and keep automating, which leads to SRE work. What about shifts and on-call? Some roles have rotations. Ask how on-call works, how often, and whether it's paid, before accepting.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | List 3 production incidents you helped with and their causes | 3 stories |
| 2 | Read the first chapter of the free SRE book | Notes |
| 3 | Add Actuator and Micrometer to a small Spring Boot app | Metrics visible |
| 4 | Run Prometheus locally and scrape the app | Scrape works |
| 5 | Build one dashboard | Dashboard saved |
| 6 | Take a thread dump and read it | Notes on 3 threads |
| 7 | Save 10 SRE, production support or DevOps postings | 10 links |
Days 1–30: A monitored service
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add alerts, break the app on purpose and write the runbook | about 12 hours over 3 weeks | repo + runbook | One alert. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Share it with 5 people in SRE or support teams | about 2 hours | 5 messages | Share it with 3 people in SRE or support teams. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: You can show an alert firing and your response.
Days 31–60: Linux and cloud basics
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise Linux commands for logs, processes and disk | about 5 hours | 10 sessions | 5 sessions. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Apply to 8 SRE, production support or application support roles | about 4 hours | 8 logged | Apply to 4 SRE, production support or application support roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call for SRE or support.
Days 61–90: Incident stories
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise 4 incident scenarios aloud | about 4 hours | 4 scenarios | Practise 2 incident scenarios aloud. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Ask 2 ex-colleagues in ops teams for referrals | about 1 hour | 2 asks | Just one instead of 2. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 90: A scenario round you handle calmly.

Java developers ask about SRE
Will I stop coding? Less feature work, more automation and fixes. Many SRE roles still code. Do I need Kubernetes? It appears in many listings. Learn basics after your first proof.
