Friday, 6 pm: the login breaks, and you're the only one who can see the whole picture

The frontend team says it's the API (application programming interface). The API team says it's the database. You open the browser console, the server logs and the database in three tabs, and twenty minutes later you've found it: a cookie setting changed in a deploy. Nobody asked you to own the whole stack — you just could.

FromFull-Stack DeveloperToYour next route

That ability to follow a problem across every layer is exactly what the routes below need. If your last role ended, possibly because AI tools changed how your team was staffed, this page is a calm place to work out what comes next. "full stack developer jobs" still sees about 5,400 searches a month in India and 2,900 in the US, so the title isn't gone. But three neighbouring routes reward your breadth in new ways.

Stack Layer Cake

Build your stack as a cake. Drag layers onto the plate — database, API, auth, frontend, deploy, payments, AI calls — in any order. Each layer you add drops in with a little wobble and a label. When you're done, a candle lights on top and the cake shows which route your layers feed: lots of auth, deploy and data layers point to AI MVP (minimum viable product) rescue; API and payments point to API integration; a tall, balanced cake points to solutions engineering. Your cake is saved only on your device, and you can share it as an image on your Path Card.

Stack cake

Your three routes

AI MVP rescue. Founders and small teams build apps quickly with AI tools, then hit walls: broken auth, leaky data rules, failed deploys, slow pages. You fix the foundations so the app can grow. Full-stack developers fit well because the problems cross every layer. → AI MVP rescue route · related bridge: web developer → AI MVP rescue

Solutions engineer. Sit between a product and its customers: run technical demos, build proofs of concept, answer integration questions and help sales teams stay honest. Your breadth lets you speak to a CTO and a frontend developer in the same call. → Solutions engineer route

API integration engineer. Connect systems: payment providers, CRMs, AI APIs, webhooks. Reliability matters more than novelty — retries, idempotency, monitoring. → API integration route · related bridge: backend developer → API integration

Your full-stack strengths

Tick the ones you're strongest in:

  • Debugging across layers
  • Explaining technical trade-offs to non-engineers
  • Auth and security basics
  • Third-party APIs and webhooks
  • Deploys and environments
  • Building quick demos

Look at your ticks. Strong debugging plus deploys suggests MVP rescue. High explaining plus demos suggests solutions engineering. High APIs suggests integration. Your ticks stay on your device.

Every route starts from a station you already know.

What carries over, and what's new

You already do It becomes
Ship features end to end Rescue whole apps, not just a ticket

New for most people: customer-facing communication, scoping fixed-price work, writing short audit reports, and saying "no" politely to unrealistic requests.

Free tools to start with (checked 23 Oct 2026)

  • Vercel Hobby — free plan for personal projects.
  • Supabase Free — free: 500 MB database, 2 active projects; free projects pause after one week of inactivity. Pro is paid.
  • Postman Free — free plan for testing and documenting APIs.

We list these because they're common in rescue and integration work, not as endorsements. Plans change; check the official pricing pages before you rely on a limit.

Picking by career stage

Early career (0–3 years): API integration — clear scope and quick proof. Mid (3–8 years): AI MVP rescue — your cross-layer debugging is rare and valued. Senior (8+ years): solutions engineering — judgement, communication and architecture matter most. These are suggestions, not rules.

Full-stack hiring in India and abroad

India: product start-ups, SaaS companies selling to global customers, and agencies serving founders. Solutions engineering roles often sit with SaaS firms in Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, and many are remote. Global: founders building with AI tools look for rescue help on freelance platforms and in communities; solutions engineering roles exist across SaaS. Contract, tax and visa questions are outside our scope — please ask a qualified professional.

Proof ideas that fit full-stack people

  • MVP rescue: take a deliberately broken sample app (your own), fix auth rules, add environment separation and write a one-page "before and after" audit.
  • Solutions engineering: record a 5-minute demo of a public API with a small app you built, then write the FAQ a customer would ask.
  • Integration: a webhook receiver with retries, idempotency keys and a log of failed events.

Pick one. Depth on one beats three half-finished projects.

Your realistic 90 days

You owned features from the database to the button — APIs, auth, deploys, the 2 am incident. AI coding tools now write a lot of the boilerplate, so hiring has tilted toward people who can ship whole systems and fix what the tools get wrong. You'll start from a feature you built end to end.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • Startups want 25-year-olds. Customer-facing engineering roles value people who can ship and also explain.
  • A gap. Ship a small tool for a real user and date it.
  • No degree. Startups screen on a repo or demo.
  • English with clients. Rehearse one 3-minute demo; it covers most calls.
  • Family wants stability. Solutions engineering is a steady salaried role at SaaS firms.
  • Runway. Freelance fixes for AI-built apps can bring some income.

Where the openings are, and what to type

Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.

Startups, SaaS companies and agencies. Wellfound, Cutshort and LinkedIn carry most full-stack posts; customer-facing engineering roles (solutions, forward deployed) appear mainly on LinkedIn.

  • LinkedIn search string: ("full stack" OR "fullstack") AND ("solutions engineer" OR "forward deployed" OR "MVP" OR "customer engineer")
  • Naukri / foundit keywords: full stack developer, MERN developer, solutions engineer

Job-hunt moves that matter for this route

  • Search 'full-stack + AI', 'AI engineer', 'forward deployed engineer' on LinkedIn, Wellfound and Instahyre.
  • Referrals from ex-teammates at product companies move faster than cold applications.
  • Show a repo where the README is honest about what AI wrote.

About full-stack pay

We haven't verified pay data for these routes, so we don't quote figures.

Scams full-stack developers see

Fake "project" tests that ask you to build an entire app for free, recruiters asking for deposits, and anyone asking for OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).

Full-stack questions

Is "full-stack" still a job title? Yes — searches remain healthy. These routes are options next to it, not replacements. Do I need to pick one route forever? No. Many people start with integration work and move into rescue or solutions engineering. Should I learn a new framework first? Usually not. Proof of solving real problems matters more than a new framework badge.
