If you've ever been the one pulled into a client call because "you explain it better than the sales team" — this page is for you. Solutions engineering (also called pre-sales, sales engineering or solutions consulting) is a technical job where your main tool is a clear explanation. You don't need to love selling. You need to love making something make sense to someone.
Take your time with it.
Solutions engineer vs nearby roles
| Solutions engineer | Forward-deployed engineer | Developer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main moment | Before the customer buys | After, inside the customer's setup | Building the product |
| Day mostly | Discovery calls, demos, proofs of concept | Building custom integrations on site/remote | Code, reviews |
| Code amount | Light to medium | Heavy | Heavy |
| Talks to customers | Daily | Daily | Sometimes |
| Learn more | You're here | Forward-deployed engineer | — |
If you want more code and less talking, also look at API integration engineer.
What the work looks like
Discovery: you ask how the buyer works today and where it hurts. Demo: you show the product solving their problem, not every feature. Proof of concept: a small working setup with their data or a sample. Questions: security questionnaires, API (application programming interface) questions, "does it integrate with X?" Hand-over: you brief the delivery team so promises match reality.
Who suits it
Good fit: developers and agency folk who enjoy client calls, trainers, support engineers, people who stay calm when a demo breaks. Harder fit: if talking to strangers drains you every day, or targets and quarterly pressure feel unbearable — it's a real part of most SE roles.
Rank your priorities
Put these in order: more code · more client contact · stable salary · travel · remote work · learning fast. Then find the route row in the table above that best matches your top three. There's no wrong order.
Objection Deck
Six cards, each a real-sounding buyer worry: "We tried a tool like this and nobody used it." "Is our data safe?" "Can it work with our old CRM?" Flip a card, pick one of three replies, and see how an experienced SE would answer — and why the honest "I don't know yet, I'll find out" sometimes scores best. You're practising the job's hardest skill in two minutes.

Tools for practice (all have free plans, checked 23 Oct 2026)
- Loom — record demos and walkthroughs.
- Postman — build an API collection that shows a product's integration story.
- A free CRM — Zoho CRM free or HubSpot CRM free, to understand the systems buyers already use.
- Slides — Google Slides is enough.
Certifications: not required to start. Some vendors run their own product certifications after you join. We haven't found a general SE certificate we'd tell you to pay for first.
On pay, honestly
We haven't verified pay data for this role yet. Many SE roles include a base plus a variable portion tied to sales — read each offer carefully.
India and global
In India, SE and pre-sales roles show up at SaaS companies (Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, NCR) and IT services firms. Globally, the US has much more search interest (5,400 vs 1,300/month). Remote SE roles for other regions exist but are competitive; time zones matter. Visa questions are outside what we can advise on.
Where to look
LinkedIn, Naukri, Instahyre and company careers pages. Search: "solutions engineer", "pre-sales engineer", "sales engineer", "solutions consultant", "technical account manager". Your best entry may be a product you already know from your old job — your experience as a user is a strength.
Your realistic 90 days
Support engineers, implementation consultants and developers who like customers come here. Solutions engineers run technical demos, answer security questions and build proofs of concept for SaaS sales. Your starting artefact is a customer escalation you solved.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.

Worries people bring to this route
- Is it for younger people? Buyers trust someone who has shipped and supported real systems.
- A gap. Record a dated 5-minute demo of a real product's API and the objection you'd handle.
- Degree. SaaS teams screen on a mock demo more than a degree.
- Speaking English to clients. Demos follow a script; rehearse twice on video and trim.
- Family hears 'sales' and worries. You're the engineer in the room, not the quota-carrier.
- Runway. Support engineering roles share the skill and hire faster.

XP: learning 20 · proof 60 · outreach 40. Ranks: Wayfinder → Builder → Pathmaker. Progress stays in your browser only.
The honest side
- Variable pay can make income uneven. Ask how targets are set.
- You'll sometimes demo to people who won't buy. That's normal.
- Pressure to "just say yes" exists. Your long-term credibility depends on not doing it.
Pre-sales scams to avoid
Fake "sales engineer" posts asking for a training deposit, or asking you to buy their product to resell. Official company domains only. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India) or ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Things readers ask about pre-sales
Do I need sales experience? No. Client-facing work as a developer counts. Will I lose my coding skills? You'll code less; proofs of concept keep you sharp. Is it a step down? No — it's a different shape of senior technical work. What portfolio works? Two short demo videos and a written integration explainer.
