From shipping features to shipping inside a customer
- Shipped features across the stack → Build the customer-specific pieces quickly
- Cleaned bad data in production → Connect messy customer data safely
- Talked to users about bugs → Sit with customer teams and spot the real problem
- Wrote release notes → Write field notes that shape the product
The new parts are working inside someone else's organisation, writing clear field notes, and deciding what to fix for one customer versus what to send back to product.
Is forward deployed work for you?
(Takes about a minute; answers stay on your device.)
- Have you shipped something for a user you could talk to directly? (yes / no)
- Have you worked with messy, real data? (yes / no)
- Can you go from frontend to database in one afternoon? (yes / no)
- Do you like solving one customer's problem more than polishing a platform? (yes / no)
- Are you comfortable with changing priorities? (yes / no)
Four or five yeses: this bridge is short for you. Two or three: still reachable. Fewer: start with the full-stack developer role page and come back.
Field proof: one tool, one real user, dated notes
Find one real person with a small, real problem: a relative's shop, an NGO, a friend's team. Then:
- Spend an hour watching how they work today.
- Build the smallest tool that helps, using their real (or anonymised) data.
- Deploy it where they can use it, and watch them use it.
- Keep dated field notes: what broke, what they asked for, what you'd tell a product team.
The field notes are the proof. Interviewers for this role ask about them.
Customer Site Day
A day at a pretend customer site. Each card is a moment; pick the move an FDE would make.
Customer Site Day
Your realistic 90 days
Full-stack work taught you to move from screen to database in a day. Forward deployed work asks for that speed inside someone else's organisation, with their messy data and their deadlines. The plan below gets you one real deployment to talk about.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
The two worries we hear most about this move
Are these jobs only in the US? Many FDE listings come from US AI firms, but several list India locations or remote roles with overlap hours. Filter by location and read the time-zone line before applying. I've never met a customer. Can I still apply? Yes, if you have helped one real user. The proof project is built for that: a relative's shop or an NGO counts if you kept honest notes.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Shipped features across the stack | Build the customer-specific pieces quickly |
| Cleaned bad data in production | Connect messy customer data safely |
| Talked to users about bugs | Sit with customer teams and spot the real problem |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | List 3 times you fixed something for a user you could talk to | 3 stories |
| 2 | Find one person with a small real problem you could help with | Person agreed |
| 3 | Watch them work for an hour and take notes | Notes written |
| 4 | Build the smallest helpful tool | Works on their data |
| 5 | Deploy it where they can use it | They used it once |
| 6 | Write dated field notes | One page |
| 7 | Save 10 FDE, customer engineer or implementation postings | 10 links |
Days 1–30: One real deployment
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Improve the tool from their feedback and publish anonymised field notes | about 14 hours over 3 weeks | notes + demo | Notes only. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Send the notes to 5 people in AI or data companies | about 2 hours | 5 messages | Send the notes to 3 people in AI or data companies. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: Your user asks for a second feature.
Days 31–60: A second setting
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat with a second user in a different kind of organisation | about 10 hours | second set of notes | Shorter pilot. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Apply to 8 FDE, customer engineer or implementation roles | about 4 hours | 8 logged | Apply to 4 FDE, customer engineer or implementation roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call for an FDE, implementation or solutions role.
Days 61–90: Interview depth for forward deployed engineer roles
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare a 10-minute walkthrough of one deployment and what you'd change | about 3 hours | rehearsed twice | Once. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Post a short write-up on your field lessons | about 2 hours | post live | DM 3 people. | Write it as a draft and publish later. A saved draft still counts. |
Signal by day 90: A case interview or paid pilot.

FDE questions we get
Do I need AI experience? It helps, but listings we read stressed shipping and customer work. Small AI steps in your proof are enough to start. Is there travel? Sometimes. Ask early; many roles are remote-first.
Earnings: not verified yet
We haven't verified pay data for forward deployed engineer roles. Rates differ by city, company and contract type.
Watch for fake 'pilot' offers
Be careful with "test tasks" that are really unpaid client work, recruiters asking for fees, or anyone asking for OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
