Who decides whether an AI answer is any good?

Often, a person with a rubric and a strong cup of tea.

FromMy old roleToAI Evaluator

AI models don't grade themselves reliably. Companies building them, and companies building products on top of them, need people to read answers and judge them: accurate or not, helpful or not, safe or not, following the instructions or wandering off to write a poem nobody asked for. That's an AI evaluator (also called AI rater, LLM (large language model) tester, or AI QA analyst).

"AI evaluator jobs" draws about 260 searches a month in India and 590 in the US, and it's rising. The much larger "AI training jobs" search (5,400 India / 18,100 US) covers related work; we explain that on AI training jobs.

Rater Calibration Round

You and an imaginary "senior rater" both score the same six AI answers on a 1–5 scale. After each, a needle shows how far apart you were. At the end, the page shows your agreement and — the twist — reveals which two answers even experienced raters split on, with the rubric line that would have settled it. You leave knowing that disagreement usually means the rubric needs work, not that you're bad at this. Nothing is saved off your device.

You vs the senior rater

Checklist: is this route for you?

Five or more ticks: a good fit to try. Fewer: still possible, but check the AI test automation or red-teaming routes.

How much time are you giving it?

A few hoursPart-timeFull-time
  • A few hours: bridge income on one listed platform, plus a portfolio piece.
  • Part-time: two platforms or a specialised project, plus applications.
  • Full-time: aim for in-house AI QA analyst or evaluation roles; use platforms as a bridge.

Five kinds of evaluation task

  • Single-answer rating: score an answer on accuracy, helpfulness, safety, instruction-following.
  • Pairwise comparison: pick the better of two answers and say why.
  • Writing or editing answers: sometimes you write what the ideal response would be.
  • Safety review: flag harmful or risky outputs. You can decline projects with content you don't want to see.
  • Specialist rating: law, medicine, finance, coding, languages — where subject knowledge matters.

Who arrives here

From the testing world: manual testers bring careful requirement-reading and bug-report clarity; automation testers bring structured rubrics and calibration habits. Teachers, editors, support staff and domain experts also arrive here.

The train is real. So is the work. Start small.

Platforms we've checked (21 Oct 2026)

  • Outlier — with caution: bridge income; India work can be irregular; impersonators exist, so use outlier.ai only.
  • Alignerr — with caution: confirm hourly vs per-approved-task pay before starting; some applicants see "Location Denied".
  • Turing — with caution: 3+ years' experience; contract; long vetting; payment delays reported.
  • Mercor — listed for expert-level work.
  • iMerit, NextWealth — employers in India's AI data services sector.

Not for India — DataAnnotation: it accepts applicants only from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia (checked 21 Oct 2026), so we don't recommend it to India-based readers. Don't use a VPN or a false location to get around this.

From bridge to career

Platform work is a bridge. The career version is an in-house role: AI QA analyst, evaluation specialist, or rater lead who writes rubrics and runs calibration. To get there, show you can design the rubric, not just apply it. If you enjoy the technical side, LLM evaluation engineering is the next step.

Your realistic 90 days

Manual testers, content moderators, editors and support QA analysts come here. AI evaluators judge model answers against written guidelines. Your starting artefact is a test-case sheet or quality checklist from your last job — the same discipline, applied to AI output.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • I'm 42 and tested manually for 15 years. That is the profile: careful, sceptical, good at writing up failures. Lead with your bug reports.
  • Out of work for a while. Run a small eval of a public chatbot and publish the sheet. It shows current skill.
  • Only a BSc or BCA. Testing roles rarely filter on degree type. A clear eval sheet does more.
  • Writing in English slows me down. Eval notes follow a template: input, expected, actual, severity. You already write these.
  • Relatives think testing AI is not 'real' work. Companies are paying for exactly this before launch. It's QA with a new target.
  • Savings worry. Apply to regular QA roles that mention AI features at the same time.
