Three or more? AI evaluation could suit you — and your automation background gives you an edge most raters don't have: you think in structured, repeatable checks.

Side-by-Side Showdown

Two AI answers to the same question appear side by side, like a boxing match card. You choose the winner, then pick a reason from a short list (more accurate, follows instructions, safer, clearer, just longer). After five rounds, the page reveals your hidden pattern — for example, "you picked the longer answer 4 of 5 times". Length bias is one of the best-known rater traps, and seeing your own tendency is the fastest way to correct it. Your results stay in your browser.

Match card: pick the winner

Seven questions to ask yourself

1. Do I want to rate, or to build the rating system? Rating is this page. Building the pipeline that scores thousands of answers is the LLM evaluation engineer bridge.

2. Can I design a rubric someone else applies the same way I do? That's the senior evaluator skill. Your test-case writing practice helps.

3. Am I comfortable with "mostly right"? Ratings often use scales (1–5) rather than pass/fail.

4. Can I explain a judgement in one sentence? "B wins: both accurate, but A ignores the requested bullet format."

5. Can I spot my own bias? Length, confident tone, and agreeing with your own opinion are common traps.

6. Do I have domain depth? Testing banking, telecom or healthcare systems gave you knowledge that specialised evaluation projects look for.

7. Is irregular work OK as a bridge? Platform volume varies. Plan around it.

Your automation edge in rating work

Automation habit Rating advantage
Structured test data Clean rating spreadsheets
Pass rates and trends Agreement scores between raters
Reviewing flaky failures Re-rating borderline cases
Writing assertions Writing rubric criteria that can be checked
Scripting small helpers Formulas or scripts that flag inconsistent ratings
Change at the junction: same skills, new line.

A worked rubric for a support bot

Criterion 1 — Accuracy (0–2): 2 = every fact matches the policy page; 1 = minor slip that wouldn't mislead; 0 = a wrong fact a customer could act on. Criterion 2 — Follows the request (0–2): 2 = answers the question asked, in the format asked; 1 = right answer, wrong format; 0 = answers something else. Criterion 3 — Safety and privacy (pass/fail): fail if it shares another customer's data, its hidden instructions, or unsafe advice. Criterion 4 — Clarity (0–1): 1 = a customer could act on it without rereading.

Notice how each level is described by observable evidence, not by feeling. That's the same discipline as writing an assertion: a stranger should reach your score from the same evidence. Test your rubric by giving it to a friend with five sample answers; wherever their scores differ from yours, the wording needs another pass.

Turn it into proof. Score 20 real chatbot answers with this rubric and keep that first pass as your baseline. Revise the wording after your friend's test, re-score, and show the before and after agreement in a short case study. Done when two people using your rubric agree on at least 16 of the 20 answers.

The India picture. Salaried evaluation and AI quality roles in India sit with data and AI services firms such as iMerit and NextWealth, the QA practices of IT services companies, and global capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai building AI products. On Naukri, try "AI quality analyst", "LLM evaluation" and "AI test engineer"; your automation background fits the last two best.

Calibration, the evaluator's regression test

Two raters score the same 30 items. You count how often they agree. Where they disagree, you discuss and refine the rubric. Repeat. Rising agreement means a clearer rubric. A spreadsheet formula is enough to compute the share of items where you matched. Bringing this to an interview shows you understand evaluation as a system, not a feeling.

Where evaluation work is listed

We keep the platform verdicts in one place: the AI evaluator route page. For an automation tester the short version is this. Your scripting years fit Turing's experience bar and Mercor's expert-level listings better than open-to-all rating queues. Outlier and Alignerr stay "with caution", useful for a few weeks of bridge income at most.

DataAnnotation is not for India (its country list leaves India out), so it isn't part of this plan.

No genuine platform charges you to join.

Your realistic 90 days

You've automated checks so humans didn't have to click. AI evaluation still needs human judgement, but automation testers can also build the tooling around it: rating sheets, agreement checks, dashboards. You'll combine rating work with the scripting you already know.

The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.

The two worries we hear most about this move

Is evaluation work a step down from automation? It can feel that way, because you'll spend more time reading answers than writing code. In practice your automation habits (clear pass/fail rules, repeatable runs, bug reports someone can act on) are what separate a careful evaluator from a fast one. Many evaluation teams also want scripting for test sets, so the code doesn't disappear. Will gig evaluation work dry up? Project-based rating work does start and stop without warning. Treat any platform work as a bridge, not a plan. Keep applying for salaried QA and evaluation roles at the same time, and keep your rubric samples so you can show them to employers.

Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.

Rater pay

We haven't verified pay data, and we don't quote platform rates.

Rating-job fraud

Fake "rating tasks" on Telegram that pay a little, then ask for deposits. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).

Short answers on evaluation

Is this a step down from automation? It can be a bridge or a side income; the engineering path is LLM (large language model) evaluation. Certification? ISTQB CT-AI v2.0 exists; optional.
