A manual tester reads a requirement, runs the build, and decides: does this meet the bar, and if not, exactly why? An AI evaluator reads a rating guideline, reads an AI answer, and decides the same thing. The object changed from a screen to a paragraph. The discipline didn't.
"AI evaluator jobs" gets about 260 searches a month in India and 590 in the US, and it's rising. The broader "AI training jobs" term is far bigger (5,400 India / 18,100 US); we cover that on the AI training jobs page. This page is about getting good at the evaluation part specifically.
Hallucination Hunt
Five short AI answers appear, each about an everyday topic (train timings, a recipe, a tax deadline, a product spec, a historical date). One or two contain a confident made-up detail. Tap the sentence you think is invented. The page then reveals which were wrong and why a careful reader could tell — a citation that doesn't exist, numbers that don't add up, a date that contradicts itself. Your score is shown only to you. It's the same instinct you used to spot a field that silently accepted bad input.
Find the invented detail
Ask yourself these first
Answer honestly; there's no score.
1. Can I stay careful on the 40th item, not just the first? Evaluation is often batches. Your regression-cycle stamina counts.
2. Do I follow a guideline even when I disagree with it? Raters apply the rubric as written and flag disagreements separately. Same as testing against a spec you think is wrong.
3. Can I write a note someone else understands without me? "Answer 3 states the refund window is 60 days; the source says 30. Accuracy fail." That's a bug report.
4. Am I comfortable checking facts quickly? You'll verify claims against sources. Speed comes with practice.
5. Can I compare two answers and choose, with a reason? Side-by-side (pairwise) judgements are common. "B is better: same accuracy, half the length, answers the actual question."
6. Do I know a subject well? Domain knowledge — banking, insurance, healthcare, telecom, the domains you tested — can lead to specialised rating work. Experienced testers often know a domain deeply without realising it's valuable.
7. Can I live with irregular work for a while? Platform work goes up and down. Plan for that.
8. Do I want this as a bridge or a career? Both are fine. A bridge pays something while you build; a career means moving toward evaluation roles inside companies. See the AI evaluator route.

Your testing habits, renamed
| You did this as a tester | It's called this in evaluation |
|---|---|
| Test against acceptance criteria | Rate against a rubric |

Where to find evaluation work
Every platform we checked, with its verdict, is listed once on the AI evaluator route page. From manual testing, two points matter most. Outlier and Alignerr are listed with caution, so treat them as bridge income while your rating sample does the real job-hunting work. Turing usually asks for three or more years of experience, which most testers have.
If you'd rather have a salaried seat, iMerit and NextWealth hire for data and AI services in India; check their careers pages directly.
You'll also see DataAnnotation mentioned online. It's not for India, since it only takes applicants from a handful of other countries, so skip it rather than faking a location.
Joining a genuine platform costs nothing. If anyone asks for a fee, walk away.
A syllabus if you want structure
ISTQB Certified Tester AI Testing (CT-AI) v2.0 is available (checked 23 Oct 2026). It covers testing AI-based systems. It's optional; your rating sheet is the stronger proof. Exam fees vary by national board.
Your realistic 90 days
Your job was judging whether software behaved as expected and writing it up clearly. AI evaluators judge whether an AI answer is correct, safe and helpful, against written guidelines. It's often remote contract work and can be uneven. You'll start by reusing how you wrote expected results.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Compared actual vs. expected results | Compare an AI answer to a rubric and a reference |
| Wrote precise bug reports | Write short, auditable rationales for each rating |
| Followed a test plan exactly | Follow long rating guidelines consistently |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Take 10 of your old test cases and rewrite each 'expected result' as a 3-point rubric | 10 rubrics |
| 2 | Ask a free AI chat tool 20 questions in a domain you know (banking, telecom, e-commerce) | 20 answers |
| 3 | Rate each 1–3 for accuracy, helpfulness and safety, with a one-line reason | 20 rated rows |
| 4 | Re-rate 5 a day later without looking; check consistency | Agreement noted |
| 5 | Read eligibility pages for India on 3 platforms (DataAnnotation is not for India; Outlier only with caution) | A shortlist |
| 6 | Set a weekly hour cap for rating work | Cap written |
| 7 | Save 5 AI evaluator postings that accept India | 5 links |
Days 1–30: A rating sample and a first application
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publish a 30-item rating sample with rubric and rationales | about 8 hours over 3 weeks | shared Sheet | 15 items. | Save or commit what works now and stop adding. A finished small version beats an unfinished big one. |
| Apply to 3 evaluator postings or platforms that accept India | about 2 hours | 3 logged | Just one instead of 3. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 30: You've been invited to or passed a qualification test.
Days 31–60: Consistency and domain
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add a domain-specific set (your old industry) with 20 items | about 6 hours | domain set added | 10 items. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Track your hours and quality feedback weekly | about 1 hour | 4 weekly notes | 2 weeks. | Bookmark where you stopped. It will still be there next week. |
Signal by day 60: Tasks arriving or a screening call with a vendor.
Days 61–90: Decide how much to rely on it
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decide: keep as a bridge, grow toward AI QA roles, or stop | about 1 hour | a written decision | One line. | Put it on hold until your current interviews are done, then come back to it. |
| Apply to 5 AI QA roles at companies using your rating sample | about 3 hours | 5 logged | Apply to 2 AI QA roles at companies using your rating sample. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 90: 60 days of data on hours and feedback.
The two worries we hear most about this move
Will evaluation work disappear as AI gets better? Better models still need people checking them, especially in Indian languages, regional context and specialised fields. The tasks change over time. Keep your examples of careful, well-reasoned judgements; they're your portfolio. Is platform work safe to rely on? No. Projects start and stop, and some platforms don't accept people in India. Use platform work as a bridge and keep applying for salaried QA and evaluation roles.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.
One search that fits your background
The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route

Evaluator pay
We haven't verified pay data for evaluator roles, and we don't quote platform rates.
Fake rating jobs
Scammers copy evaluation job language. Warning signs: a WhatsApp or Telegram "recruiter", a joining fee, "deposit to unlock tasks". Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (India), ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US).
Quick answers for testers
Do I need to code? No. Do I need a degree? Platforms differ; check each one. Is this a permanent job? Platform work usually isn't; in-house evaluator roles can be.
