If the answer is "too many", that's the market for this route. Reporting automation specialists take repeated reports and make them run on their own, with checks, logs and an alert when something looks off.
Search data, for honesty: "report automation" gets around 170 searches a month in India and 320 in the US (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026). Small. The jobs mostly sit under other titles — MIS executive ("mis executive jobs" ~5,400/month in India, keyword research), reporting analyst, automation analyst.
⏰ The 1st-of-the-Month Alarm
An alarm clock rings: "It's the 1st." A to-do list drops down with 11 manual steps. Each time you tap a step you could automate, it turns into a small gear and the clock hand jumps back. Leave one step manual on purpose — "check the exceptions" — and a note pops up: "Good. Humans review; machines repeat." Steps are illustrative.
It's the 1st ⏰
Which tool? A decision tree
- If your data already lives in Google Sheets → then try Apps Script triggers or a scheduled query. Free inside Workspace.
- If your company runs on Microsoft 365 → then Power Automate plus Excel or Power BI. Licensing depends on the organisation's plan; ask IT what you already have before buying anything.
- If the data comes from many web apps (CRM, payments, forms) → then an integration platform like Make. Free tier noted in our 23 Oct log; the pricing page blocked our automated check on 24 Oct, so re-check before you rely on limits.
- If the reports run off a database → then SQL with scheduled refresh in your BI tool.
- If the input is PDFs or scanned invoices → then see the document AI automation route.
- If none of the above, and the report is a one-off → then don't automate it. Note it and move on.
MIS demand: India or global?
Most demand reads as "MIS executive" or "MIS analyst" in listings. Excel, Google Sheets and Tally exports show up often (observation). Many roles are in operations, finance, sales back-office and logistics. Hindi or regional-language communication can help with branch teams.
More listings say "reporting analyst", "BI analyst" or "automation analyst". Power Automate and Power BI appear more often (observation). Remote work for overseas teams usually means overlapping time zones; check carefully.
Field notes on picking the first report
- Repeated at least weekly.
- Same inputs, same format each time.
- Rules you can write down.
- Someone who'll notice if it breaks.
- Not legally sensitive data for your first try.
A week-one timing exercise
Before touching any tool, time yourself. Pick the report you dread most and write down each step with minutes beside it: download, open, paste, fix dates, remove duplicates, pivot, check totals, format, email. Mark each step R (repeatable rule), J (judgement) or W (waiting on someone). The R steps are your automation list. The J steps stay with you, and they are what you'll describe in interviews. The W steps are a process problem, not a tool problem — note them for the manager. This sheet becomes the "before" half of your portfolio write-up, in your own numbers rather than anyone's claimed savings.
What a good automated report includes
- Run log: when it ran, how many rows, pass or fail.
- Exception list: rows outside expected ranges.
- An owner name.
- A one-page "how to rerun it by hand" note.
- A before/after time estimate in your own numbers.

Your realistic 90 days
MIS executives, finance analysts and Excel reporting staff come here. The job is turning weekly hand-made reports into refreshed pipelines with Power Query, Power BI or Apps Script. Your starting artefact is the MIS report you built every Monday.

Worries people bring to this route
- Over 40 in MIS? MIS heads trust people who know month-end pressure. That's experience.
- A gap. Automate a sample month-end pack on dummy data and date it.
- Only a B.Com. Very common in MIS teams.
- English. Reports and a short cover note are the output.
- Family. Same office world, fewer late nights at month-end.
- Runway. MIS roles hire steadily across cities; apply while you build.

"Data entry from home" scams
Many fake "MIS / data entry from home" offers ask for registration fees or ID copies. Don't pay. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Reporting automation questions
Will automation remove my MIS job? It removes the copying. Someone still decides what the report means and what to do when it breaks.
Do I need to code? Not to start. Apps Script and Power Automate both work with little code; some JavaScript or expressions help later.
