Myth 2: "Small agencies don't need project managers." Small agencies often need delivery discipline most — they can build fast but lose track of scope, dates and promises.
Myth 3: "I'd have to code n8n flows." You read the build stack well enough to ask good questions. The builders build.
Myth 4: "Nobody searches for this." True-ish. "Fractional project manager" gets about 170 searches a month in the US and OpenSEO returned no India figure (24 Oct 2026). You'll sell the outcome, not the title.
The awkward truth: income from this route is uneven at the start. Many people pair it with a job search. That's sensible, not failure.
Retainer Week Planner
Drag blocks onto a week grid: two agency clients, 3 hours each for stand-ups, 2 hours for client updates, 1 hour for change requests, plus your own job-search blocks. The planner warns when you've promised more hours than exist — gently, with a tired-coffee-cup icon. It shows hours only.
Week planner
Choose your shape
Card 1 — One agency, deeper. 2–3 days a week, closer to an embedded delivery manager. Steadier, fewer clients to juggle.
Card 2 — Two or three agencies, lighter. A few hours each per week: cadence, scope, client updates. More variety; more context-switching.
Card 3 — Employed agency PM. Same skills, full-time job at one agency. Search "project manager" or "delivery manager" with "automation" or "AI" in the description; "delivery manager jobs" gets about 140 searches a month in India and 170 in the US (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026).
Sort your strengths
Whatever lands in "to build" becomes your week-one learning list.
The toolkit (checked 23–24 Oct 2026)
- Jira (Free plan tier; user limit not confirmed — Atlassian), or whatever tracker the agency already uses.
- Make (free plan) and n8n (free self-hosted Community Edition) — learn to read workflows (Make, n8n).
- A shared doc for SOWs and a screen recorder for client updates.
About partner directories: they can help you find agencies, but check eligibility. n8n's Expert Partner pilot lists the UK, Ireland, Northern Europe or North America among its criteria (checked 24 Oct 2026). We couldn't load Make's partner directory.
Your realistic 90 days
Delivery managers, engineering managers and agency project heads come here. Small agencies and startups hire a part-time delivery lead for a few days a month. Your starting artefact is a project rescue you led or a delivery cadence you set up.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'fractional', 'part-time delivery manager', 'contract PM' on LinkedIn.
- Agencies in Ahmedabad, Indore, Jaipur often need this.
- Write scope limits into every offer.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
Startups, small agencies and product studios that need delivery help two or three days a week. Founder networks, LinkedIn posts and referrals matter more than job boards here. In India the buyers are usually funded startups and small agencies in Bengaluru, Pune, Gurugram and Mumbai that can't justify a full-time delivery head yet. Many pay per month or per project, so agree scope in writing.
- LinkedIn search string:
("fractional" OR "part-time" OR "interim") AND ("delivery manager" OR "project manager" OR "scrum master") - Naukri / foundit keywords: part time project manager, interim delivery manager, freelance scrum master
Worries people bring to this route
- Am I too old, at 45 or 50, to go part-time? Fractional work is built for senior people; founders want someone who's seen projects slip before.
- A career gap since the layoff. A dated delivery playbook plus one pilot engagement, even short, closes it.
- No PMP or MBA. Founders ask what you shipped, not which letters you hold.
- Writing status updates in English. A weekly five-line update template does most of the work; keep sentences short.
- Family wants one steady salary. Fair. Treat fractional as a bridge or a business, and say which to them.
- Income is lumpy. It is. Keep a full-time search running until two clients renew.

The delivery kit proof
A scoping questionnaire, an SOW (statement of work) template with acceptance tied to agreed test sets for AI features, a change-request form, a client status template and a one-page "how we deliver" note. Publish a free version; it doubles as your pitch.
Make it a case study. Run the kit once, free and with permission, on a small agency or startup project. Note the baseline first (how scope, status and changes were handled before), then write a one-page before-and-after: what changed in the first four weeks, in the client's words where possible. Done when the client agrees you can share an anonymised version, and you've sent it to five agency founders.
In India, the likeliest first clients are digital agencies and funded startups in Bengaluru, Pune, Gurugram and Mumbai that have outgrown "the founder runs delivery", plus SMEs whose overseas clients expect proper status reporting.
