Kavita's first quarter as an AI program manager

Kavita ran PMO for a large services account for years. In her new role at a mid-sized bank, she inherits a list: nine AI pilots across six departments, three vendors, no shared tracker. Two pilots use customer data without a recorded approval. One has been "almost ready" for eight months.

FromMy old roleToAI Program Manager

Her first month: one tracker, one cadence, one definition of each stage. Second month: four gates with clear evidence — eval results, data approval, user feedback, running-cost note. Three pilots stop. That feels bad until leadership says it's the first time anyone could explain where AI spend was going. Third month: two pilots pass to production with owners and support plans.

Kavita is a composite. The pattern is common enough that our route research lists AI program manager, GenAI delivery manager, AI transformation manager and AI PMO lead as titles to watch. I'd tell anyone from PMO or delivery: this is your work with new risks attached.

Pilot Portfolio Heatmap

Enter up to ten made-up pilots with three ratings each: evidence (how much testing done), risk (who sees the output), and age (months running). The heatmap colours each one and draws a line: pilots in the "old, risky, little evidence" corner glow red. It's the slide Kavita wished she'd had in week one. Nothing leaves your browser.

AI program management, plainly answered

Product manager, project manager, program manager — which is this?

Program. An AI product manager decides what to build and why. An AI program manager coordinates several efforts so they ship safely and the organisation learns from them. Searches show the confusion: "ai product manager" about 4,400 a month in India and 2,900 in the US; "ai project manager" 1,900 and 3,600; "ai program manager" 140 and 260 (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026). Read job descriptions, not just titles.

What do I need to learn?

GenAI basics, evaluation basics (what an eval set is, how answers are graded), and a governance overview. Our research estimates 3–6 weeks. Tracing and eval dashboards such as Langfuse (open source, MIT, free cloud tier — GitHub) are worth seeing once so you can read them.

Which governance references matter?

NIST's AI RMF (voluntary; January 2023) and its generative-AI profile NIST-AI-600-1 (July 2024) (NIST). ISO/IEC 42001 by name; we couldn't re-check iso.org. For India, the DPDP Act, 2023, read on MeitY's site with legal colleagues. Not legal advice.

Certifications?

Optional. Early-career PMs can look at PMI's CAPM: no experience required, 23 hours of education, 150 questions in 180 minutes (PMI). We couldn't re-check PMP or Scrum.org pages on 24 Oct 2026.

Who hires?

Banks, insurers, healthcare groups, large IT services firms and consultancies — organisations running several AI efforts at once.

How the job changes with portfolio size

From 1–3 pilots (a project manager with AI scope) to 10+ pilots (a programme or PMO lead), cadence, reporting and governance change: weekly stand-ups become monthly gate reviews; a tracker becomes a portfolio dashboard.

The proof for this route

A program charter for a made-up enterprise with three pilots at different risk levels; four stage gates with evidence lists; one worked Gate 2 decision; value tracked in hours or quality, never invented money. Ten pages at most, with a one-page summary up front.

AI programme lead pay

We haven't verified pay data for AI program or transformation roles. Compare live listings for your city and experience level rather than trusting any figure quoted in a course ad.

The train is real. So is the work. Start small.

"Guaranteed AI PM job" bootcamps

Bootcamps that promise a job after payment, or collect fees via personal UPI, are a red flag. Check any certifying body on its own site. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs with anyone. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Your realistic 90 days

Delivery managers, scrum masters and PMOs come here. Companies now run several AI pilots at once with unclear owners, budgets and risk sign-offs. Your starting artefact is a RAID log or programme status report you maintained.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • Too old at 40+ to be hired? Programme roles want seniority. Show you can run AI work where results are uncertain.
  • A career gap after a long notice period. A written AI programme plan with risks and an eval gate, dated, shows current thinking.
  • Degree isn't relevant. PMs come from every background; delivery history matters.
  • Leadership English. Status updates are short and structured. Templates help more than vocabulary.
  • Family wants a 'stable' role. Programme management is the stable seat; AI is just the project type.
  • Long senior search. Take interim or contract programme roles while searching.

Where the openings are, and what to type

Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.

GCCs, IT services majors and large product firms post 'AI program manager' or 'TPM – AI'. LinkedIn and iimjobs carry most of them. In India these roles cluster in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, at GCCs, banks and service companies like TCS, Infosys and Wipro. They are not fresher roles.

  • LinkedIn search string: ("program manager" OR "TPM" OR "technical program manager") AND (AI OR ML OR GenAI)
  • Naukri / foundit keywords: AI program manager, technical program manager AI, GenAI delivery

Job-hunt moves that matter for this route

  • Look for 'AI programme manager', 'AI CoE', 'GenAI delivery' at GCCs, banks and IT services on LinkedIn.
  • PMP or SAFe still help; there's no must-have AI certificate.
  • Lead with governance artefacts — they're rarer than enthusiasm.
