A Wednesday in the life of an AI implementation consultant

09:30 Call with a logistics company's COO. She wants "AI for customer service". You ask what customers contact them about most. She doesn't know. That's today's first finding.

FromMy old roleToAI Implementation Consultant

11:00 Interview with two support agents. They spend a lot of their day searching old emails for shipment status. That's a use case: search and summarise, internal only, low risk.

14:00 Scoring session. Fifteen candidate use cases on a sheet: value, feasibility, risk. The flashy one (a customer-facing chatbot) scores high on risk because it would answer customers directly. The boring one (internal email search) wins.

16:00 Draft pilot scope: eight agents, four weeks, one success metric (time to find shipment status), a stop rule, and who approves the data.

17:30 Quick demo in a low-code tool to show the idea. Not production. Just enough for the COO to see it.

That's the route: turning enthusiasm into a governed, measurable pilot. Our research ranked it first for delivery people.

🃏 Pilot Post-Mortem Cards

Three face-down cards, each a short made-up pilot that went wrong: "the chatbot nobody was allowed to use because legal never saw it", "the summariser that worked on demo data only", "the pilot with no success metric that ran for nine months". Turn one over, guess what went wrong, then see the one-line fix. All composites; no real companies.

Three face-down pilots

Field guide to the route

Habitat. Mid-sized companies starting with AI; consultancies and IT services firms with AI practices; software vendors who need implementation help for customers; independent consultants.

What it eats. Readiness assessments, use-case prioritisation, vendor selection, pilot scoping, governance setup, managing builders, go/no-go decisions.

Titles to search. AI implementation consultant, AI consultant, AI solutions consultant, AI transformation consultant, implementation manager (AI). Search interest: "ai implementation consultant" about 50 a month in India and 590 in the US; "ai consultant" about 2,400 and 8,100 (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026).

Natural predators. Vague scope. Missing data access. No owner. Pilots that never end.

Tools it uses (checked 23–24 Oct 2026).

  • Copilot Studio for quick agent demos in Microsoft shops (Microsoft Learn).
  • Make (free plan) or n8n (free self-hosted Community Edition) for workflow demos (Make, n8n).
  • A spreadsheet for use-case scoring. Honestly, this is the main one.

Frameworks it knows. NIST AI RMF — voluntary, released January 2023; generative-AI profile NIST-AI-600-1 released July 2024 (NIST). ISO/IEC 42001 by name (we couldn't load iso.org to re-check). India's DPDP Act, 2023 — read it on MeitY's site with legal advice; not summarised here.

Partner programmes: a caution. Some tool vendors run partner programmes, but check eligibility. n8n's Expert Partner pilot lists working across the UK, Ireland, Northern Europe or North America among its criteria (checked 24 Oct 2026), so it isn't a dependable India route.

Backgrounds that fit implementation consulting

Delivery and project managers most often — see the bridge from project and delivery managers. Senior BAs with client-facing experience have their own bridge from business analysts.

The train is real. So is the work. Start small.

Implementation consulting pay

We haven't verified pay data for AI implementation consulting. Compare live listings for your city and experience level rather than trusting any figure quoted in a course ad.

Fake "AI project" clients and franchise schemes

Watch for overseas "clients" who overpay and ask for a refund to another account, and "AI consulting franchise" offers with an upfront fee. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs with anyone. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Your realistic 90 days

BAs, project managers, presales and ERP/CRM consultants come here. Mid-size firms have bought AI tools but not wired them into a process. Your starting artefact is a requirements doc or solution design you wrote — implementation is the same job with a model in the middle.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route

  • Age and seniority. Implementation is client-facing; grey hair helps in workshops. Show one scoped rollout plan.
  • Gap year. A dated mini-implementation for a small firm, even unpaid, fills it honestly.
  • Degree mismatch. Consulting looks for domain plus delivery. Your past projects matter more.
  • Workshop English. Prepare five questions in advance; listening well beats speaking well.
  • Family pressure to stay 'technical'. Consultants sit between tech and business; it's a promotion path many services firms recognise.
  • Runway. Short contract roles at partners can tide you over while you aim for full-time.

Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.

IT services firms, Zoho and Microsoft partners, and boutique consultancies hire for 'AI implementation' or 'AI solutions consultant'. LinkedIn and iimjobs carry the senior ones.
