- Have you ever written an FAQ page? (yes / no)
- Do you enjoy testing things until they break? (yes / no)
- Would you rather configure tools than write lots of code? (yes / no)
Two or three yeses? Keep reading — this route was made for you. Fewer? Look at AI agent engineer for a code-heavier path.
So what is it, really?
Q: In one sentence? A chatbot builder sets up AI assistants on websites, WhatsApp or internal tools that answer from a business's approved information, and hand off to people when they shouldn't answer.
Q: Is it "real" tech work? Yes. Most of it is configuration, writing, testing and maintenance — the same discipline as any good deployment.
Q: What does a week look like? Monday: collect FAQs and policies from the client. Tuesday–Wednesday: build and write instructions. Thursday: run a test sheet of 30+ questions. Friday: review last week's chat logs on a live bot and fix wrong answers.
Q: Who's it good for? Clear writers, ex-support staff, WordPress and web developers, trainers. Patience matters more than a degree.
Q: Who might find it frustrating? People who want lots of code, or who dislike non-technical clients.
Reverse Quiz — you grade the bot
Four bot replies to a customer asking about a late delivery. You grade each A–F using a short rubric (accurate? kind? knows its limits? next step clear?). Then see how an experienced builder graded them and why. You're the examiner this time.

Q: Which tools did you check? (23 Oct 2026)
- Botpress — free plan: 100 conversations/month, 3 seats, 3 agents. Plus is a paid tier.
- AI Engine for WordPress — free; chatbots free; embeddings and function calling in Pro; needs your own AI provider key.
- Flowise — open source; free to self-host; check flowiseai.com for current cloud plans.
- Voiceflow — free trial; no free plan shown, so don't count on it.
- WhatsApp in India — AiSensy says it has a free-forever plan (Meta charges per message separately); Interakt is used by many Indian brands. Pricing not checked.
Q: Certifications? None needed. A public test sheet showing pass/fail answers beats a certificate.
Q: Pay? We haven't verified pay data for this role. Check live listings.
A first client bot, step by step
Here is how a small, honest first project usually runs — a coaching institute that answers the same admission questions all day.
- Scope in writing. Which questions the bot answers (fees page, batch timings, location, documents needed) and which it never answers (refund decisions, medical or legal questions, anything about a specific student). Put the "never" list first.
- Collect the source. Ask for the brochure, the website FAQ and the last month of common WhatsApp questions with names removed.
- Build the bot to answer only from that source. In Botpress or AI Engine, keep the instructions short: tone, the "never" list, and the hand-off sentence.
- Write the test sheet before launch. 30 real questions, 10 tricky ones ("Can I pay half later?"), 5 off-topic ones. Mark each pass or fail.
- Hand-off. When unsure, the bot says so and passes the chat to a named person with office hours.
- First month review. Read the logs weekly, fix wrong answers, add missing content. This review is where most of the quality comes from.
Skills that transfer from other jobs
- Support agents and counsellors: you already know the real questions and the tone that calms people.
- Content writers: clear, short answers are most of the craft.
- QA testers: test sheets and edge cases are exactly the job.
- Developers: integrations, webhooks and hosting become your advantage later.
India and global demand
- India: most demand we see is WhatsApp-first — coaching institutes, clinics, D2C brands.
- Global: website and help-centre bots; US/UK clients often expect clear AI disclosure.
Rates are separate markets.
Where the work is
Search volume for "chatbot developer" is small (70/month India, 30 US). So: past clients and employers, local business networks, and job titles like Conversational AI Developer, Chatbot Developer, Support Automation Specialist on LinkedIn and Naukri.
Coming from…
Seven days to a tested bot
Day 1 collect 30 FAQs · Day 2 sign up to Botpress free · Day 3 build the FAQ bot · Day 4 write a 30-question test sheet · Day 5 fix failures · Day 6 add human hand-off · Day 7 show one person.
30/60/90: one tested demo with a published test sheet (60 XP) → a second bot on another channel (60 XP) → one live bot with a monthly review (40 XP). Smaller versions and pause on every quest.
Your 30/60/90 quests
XP: learning 20 · proof 60 · outreach 40. Ranks: Wayfinder → Builder → Pathmaker. Progress stays in your browser only.
The less shiny parts
- Free tiers are small; real clients will need paid plans and AI usage budgets.
- Bots can be confidently wrong. You own the guardrails.
- Chat logs contain personal data — collect little, disclose it's a bot, follow the client's policy. Not legal advice.
Your realistic 90 days
Web and WordPress developers, support agents and content writers come here. Clinics, coaching institutes and D2C brands answer the same 20 questions on WhatsApp all day. Your starting artefact is an FAQ page, a support macro list, or a site you built — that becomes the bot's knowledge.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
Worries people bring to this route
- Will clients trust an older builder? Owners trust someone who answers the phone and fixes things. Show a bot that hands off to a human well.
- Long time since my last job. Build a bot for a real clinic's FAQs (with permission) and date the demo.
- No degree. Bot buyers look at a demo, not certificates.
- Writing bot replies in English is hard for me. Many Indian clients want Hindi or regional-language bots. That can be your edge.
- Family doubts bots are real work. Show them a bot answering a clinic's timings at 11 pm. That usually ends the debate.
- Cash is tight. Start with fixed-price FAQ bots; keep the free tiers until a client pays for usage.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Answered repeated tickets or built FAQ pages | Turn those answers into a tested bot knowledge base |
| Wrote canned replies | Design when the bot must hand off to a human |
| Measured ticket counts | Score answers right, wrong or 'should have escalated' |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Collect 20 real-style questions from an FAQ page or support macros you wrote (no customer data) | 20 Q&A pairs |
| 2 | Build a bot on Botpress free plan or Chatbase free tier using those pairs | Bot answers in preview |
| 3 | Write 30 test questions the way Indian users type: Hinglish, typos, one-word messages | 30 rows |
| 4 | Score every answer right / wrong / should-have-handed-off | Scored sheet |
| 5 | Fix the 5 worst by editing the source answers | 5 improved on rerun |
| 6 | Add a hand-off: collect name and number, then stop | Hand-off works |
| 7 | Save 8 chatbot or 'conversational AI' postings and 5 businesses with busy WhatsApp lines | 13 rows |
Days 1–30: A bot with a scorecard
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publish the bot demo plus the before/after scorecard | about 12 hours across 3 weeks | Link + sheet | 15 test questions. | Save the sheet; bot can wait. |
| Demo to 3 businesses in your network on WhatsApp video | about 3 hours | 3 demos | Demo to 1 business in your network on WhatsApp video. | Set aside “demo to 3 businesses in your network on WhatsApp video”. |
Signal by day 30: A business owner tries it and asks a follow-up question.
Days 31–60: WhatsApp-shaped
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Read Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform docs on templates and opt-in; map your bot to them | about 5 hours | One-page compliance notes | Just opt-in rules. | OK to shelve “read Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform docs on templates and opt-in; map your bot to them” until next month. |
| Apply to 8 chatbot developer or CX automation roles | about 4 hours | 8 logged | Apply to 4 chatbot developer or CX automation roles. | Put on ice “apply to 8 chatbot developer or CX automation roles” until next month. |
Signal by day 60: A request for a quote or a screening call.
Days 61–90: One live bot
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set up a bot for one real business with a weekly answer review | about 10 hours | Live 2 weeks, review log kept | Website widget only. | Skip for now “set up a bot for one real business with a weekly answer review” until next month. |
| Write a short anonymised case study | about 2 hours | Published | 5 bullet points. | Let go of “write a short anonymised case study” for a fortnight. |
Signal by day 90: A paid setup or a second interview.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
Clinics, coaching centres, real estate brokers and e-commerce stores want WhatsApp and website bots. Agencies post on LinkedIn and Naukri as 'chatbot developer' or 'conversational AI'.
- LinkedIn search string:
("chatbot developer" OR "conversational AI" OR "WhatsApp bot" OR "Voiceflow" OR "Botpress") - Naukri / foundit keywords: chatbot developer, WhatsApp chatbot, conversational AI, Dialogflow
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'chatbot developer', 'conversational AI', 'Botpress', 'WhatsApp bot' on Naukri and Upwork.
- Clinics, coaching centres and real-estate brokers are realistic first users.
- Tell users it's a bot and collect as little personal data as possible.
Reseller traps and fake jobs
"Become a chatbot reseller — pay a fee to join" schemes, and job offers with fees, are red flags. Official domains only. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs. Report at cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 or ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Chatbot questions, answered
Do I need Python? No to start. Useful later for custom integrations. Is this the same as prompt engineering? Overlaps, but chatbot building adds content, testing, hand-off and maintenance. What should my portfolio show? Two bots and their test sheets. Monthly retainers? Reviews and updates are a natural ongoing service; not guaranteed.
