Myth: "Chatbots are just prompts." Reality: The useful ones are content, testing, hand-off and integrations — like a support desk with an API.
Myth: "I'll have to throw away my Laravel experience." Reality: The most valuable bots look things up in real systems. Those systems are often PHP apps. You know how to expose them safely.
(And no, the bot won't ask you to defend PHP's naming conventions. Probably.)
Tool comparison for PHP developers
Checked 23 Oct 2026.
| Option | Free start | Where PHP helps | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botpress | free plan: 100 conversations/month, 3 seats, 3 agents | Call your Laravel endpoints as actions | Plus is a paid tier when you outgrow it |
| Flowise | Open source, free to self-host | Self-host next to your PHP stack | You maintain the server |
| AI Engine (WordPress) | Chatbots free; Pro adds embeddings & function calling | WordPress/PHP hooks | Needs your own AI key; PHP 8.1+ |
| Your own Laravel + openai-php | Library is free; AI usage is paid | Full control, keeps logic in-house | You build the UI, logging and guardrails |
| Voiceflow | Free trial only | — | Don't plan on a free tier |
AI usage costs money once real users arrive. Discuss a monthly budget with clients early.
Controller-to-Tool Mapper
Pick a controller action you've probably written a hundred times — OrderController@status, AppointmentController@slots, InvoiceController@download. The page shows it beside its chatbot twin: a "tool" description the bot can call, the parameters it needs, and the safety rules it should follow (read-only, auth, return only what's needed). The punchline: you've been designing bot tools for years. They were just called routes.
Controller-to-Tool Mapper
India or global view
WhatsApp is usually the main channel. AiSensy says it has a free-forever plan (Meta's per-message charges are separate); Interakt is widely used by Indian brands (pricing not checked). Coaching institutes, clinics and D2C stores are common first clients. Hinglish and regional-language questions are normal — test for them.
website widgets and help-centre bots are more common. Many clients expect a clear "you're talking to a bot" notice. Indian and US rates are separate markets.
Building one bot that does something real
- Start with an FAQ bot on Botpress.
- Add one read-only Laravel endpoint — e.g. order status by order ID plus phone number.
- Protect it: token auth, rate limits, return only status and date.
- Connect the bot action to it.
- Write a 30-question test sheet, including people asking for someone else's order.
- Add a hand-off that creates a ticket or sends an email.
That one project shows content skill, integration skill and security sense — which is exactly what clients are buying.
A week in the life of a PHP-background bot builder
Monday: a call with a clinic about appointment questions. You note the "never answer" list first: diagnoses, prescriptions, test results.
Tuesday: you add a read-only slots endpoint to their existing PHP booking app, protected by a token.
Wednesday: the bot can now answer "is Dr. Rao free on Thursday evening?" — but only shows times, never patient details.
Thursday: you run the test sheet. Someone types "mera appointment kab hai?" and the bot stumbles. You add Hinglish examples and route anything personal to the front desk.
Friday: you read last week's logs from another client's bot, fix two answers, and send a short summary. That summary is often why clients keep you on.
Most of the week is careful, unglamorous work. That's a good sign — it means the bot is trustworthy.
What's new to learn
- Writing short, firm bot instructions and a "never answer" list.
- Designing test sheets and reading chat logs.
- Explaining limits to clients who expect magic.
Headline: from PHP to bots

Your realistic 90 days
You've built PHP backends that handled enquiries — contact forms, lead tables, admin panels where staff replied by hand. A chatbot builder automates the first reply and routes the rest. You'll reuse a lead or enquiry table you once designed.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
The two worries we hear most about this move
Do I need Python for chatbots? No. Most chatbot builders are configured through dashboards and APIs; PHP is fine for any glue code, and Laravel handles webhooks well. Learn how retrieval from approved content works, not a new language. What if the bot says something wrong to a customer? Plan for it: limit answers to approved content, add a 'talk to a person' route, and review conversations weekly. Showing that plan in your proof is what makes clients trust you.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Designed an enquiries table and an admin panel to reply | Design the bot's knowledge, its hand-off, and the log staff review |
| Sent SMS/WhatsApp through a gateway API from PHP | Use an official WhatsApp BSP's templates and opt-in rules |
| Validated form input server-side | Test bot answers against a question bank and fix the source content |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recall one enquiry system you built: what customers asked most | Top 10 questions listed |
| 2 | Write answers to those 10 as a clean FAQ doc | 10 answers, each under 60 words |
| 3 | Build a bot on Botpress's free plan or Voiceflow's free plan using that FAQ | Bot answers in the test chat |
| 4 | Write 25 messy real-world test questions | 25 rows in a Sheet |
| 5 | Score them; fix the FAQ where answers were wrong | Score improves on rerun |
| 6 | Add a fallback that collects name + phone and emails it to you | Test fallback lands in inbox |
| 7 | Save 10 chatbot postings and 5 businesses whose site has only a contact form | 15 rows |
Days 1–30: A scored bot from an enquiry system you knew
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ship the FAQ bot with a 25-question score sheet and a working fallback | about 10 hours over 3 weeks | before/after scores recorded | 15 questions, no fallback. | Save the sheet; stop. |
| Demo it to 3 people who run small businesses (past clients first) | about 3 hours | 3 demos, feedback noted | 1 demo. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: One business owner has seen the bot; you can show your score sheet.
Days 31–60: Connect it to something real
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Write a small PHP or n8n endpoint that saves every bot hand-off to a table staff can see | about 10 hours | hand-offs appear in a simple admin view | Send hand-offs to a Sheet. | Stop at the Sheet. |
| Read WhatsApp opt-in and template rules in AiSensy or Interakt docs | about 2 hours | a 5-line summary in your words | Opt-in only. | Bookmark where you stopped. It will still be there next week. |
| Apply to 8 chatbot / conversational AI roles | about 4 hours | 8 applications logged | Apply to 4 chatbot / conversational AI roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A business shares real FAQs or chat exports, or you reach an interview.
Days 61–90: Live for a fortnight
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Run one bot live for 2 weeks and fix wrong answers weekly | about 8 hours | 2 weekly change notes | Live on your own site. | Switch it off; keep notes. |
| Send a short 'what the bot answered' summary to 10 similar businesses | about 3 hours | 10 messages sent | 5 messages. | Put it on hold until your current interviews are done, then come back to it. |
Signal by day 90: A bot live with an owner's OK, or a second-round interview.
One search that fits your background
The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'chatbot developer', 'Botpress', 'Voiceflow', 'WhatsApp bot' on LinkedIn and Naukri.
- Your backend skill is a plus: many bot builders can't wire a proper hand-off. Say so.
- Show the score sheet and the hand-off table, not just a chat window.

Finding your first bot clients
Past clients whose PHP apps you built — "add a helpful assistant to your site" is an easy conversation. Agencies that build sites but not bots. Job titles: "chatbot developer", "conversational AI developer", "Laravel developer (AI)". Naukri, LinkedIn, Instahyre, Cutshort.
The trade-offs
- Search demand for the job title is small (30/month India); networks matter more than job boards.
- Bots can be confidently wrong. Guardrails and reviews are your responsibility.
- Personal data in chats: collect little, disclose the bot, follow the client's policy. Not legal advice.
Bot-business scams
Reseller "licences" sold upfront, guaranteed-client courses, deposit-asking job posts, and OTP/UPI PIN requests. Official domains only. Report: cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 or ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
PHP-specific questions
Can a Laravel app host the whole bot? Yes, with openai-php or HTTP calls — but you'll build logging, guardrails and UI yourself. Platforms save time early. Do I need vector databases? Not for a first FAQ bot. Learn retrieval later. WordPress or Laravel first? Whichever your past clients use.
