09:40, a Tuesday, six months from now
A clinic's contact form fires. Before anyone at the clinic looks, the enquiry is in their CRM, tagged "new patient", and a WhatsApp confirmation has gone out. You built that in an afternoon. You did not write a plugin. You did write one 8-line function — because you're a developer, and that's still useful.
That's the job. Here's the bridge.
Fit check
Suits you if: you like making boring things happen by themselves; you've touched Zapier, cron, CF7 hooks or WooCommerce emails; you're fine with less "pixel" work. Maybe not if: you mainly love visual design (see Framer/Webflow expert), or you want deep coding every day (see AI MVP rescue).

Hook Translator
Pick a hook you know — save_post, woocommerce_new_order, wpcf7_mail_sent, user_register — and see its automation twin: "Webhook trigger fired by WooCommerce → New order event." Twelve hooks, no sign-up. It's a small proof that you're not starting from zero.

Gaps to close (and the tools we checked)
- A workflow tool. n8n: self-hosted Community Edition is free; cloud starts at 20€/month (annual) with a free trial of 1,000 executions, no card. Make: free plan with 1,000 credits/month. Learn one well; the other takes a week after.
- Webhooks and JSON outside WordPress. Practise with Postman's free plan.
- A free CRM to connect to. Zoho CRM (free for up to 3 users) or HubSpot's free CRM.
- WhatsApp for Indian clients. AiSensy says it has a free-forever plan (Meta's message charges are separate). Interakt and WATI are popular too; we have not checked their prices.
- One AI step. Classifying or summarising an enquiry. Keep a human approval step for anything sent to customers.
- Certification: none needed. The n8n Academy course list (QS101, N8N101–103) is the official learning path.
Your realistic 90 days
You spent years connecting WordPress to things: WooCommerce to payment gateways, forms to CRMs, cron jobs to email. Automation work is the same thinking without the theme layer. You'll start from one plugin chain you already set up for a client.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one client site where you wired a form or WooCommerce event to email or a CRM; write the steps down | 5–8 numbered steps in a Google Doc |
| 2 | Open n8n (Community Edition, self-hosted) or a Make free account; finish n8n's Level 1 course chapter on triggers | One webhook-triggered test workflow runs |
| 3 | Set up a local WooCommerce test store (a local copy or a staging subdomain); create a test order | The order fires a webhook you can see in n8n |
| 4 | Map the order to a Google Sheet row with name, total and date | 3 test orders appear as rows |
| 5 | Add a failure branch: if the Sheet step fails, email yourself | You force a failure and receive the email |
| 6 | Record a 2-minute Loom walking through it | Loom link saved |
| 7 | Find 10 'automation' or 'n8n' or 'Make' postings on LinkedIn, Upwork or Naukri and note which tools they name | 10 rows in your sheet |
Days 1–30: One WooCommerce workflow, done properly
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ship the WooCommerce order → Sheet → owner alert workflow with retries and a failure email | about 12 hours over 3 weeks | it survives 20 test orders and one forced failure | Order → Sheet only. | Freeze it as-is and export the workflow JSON. |
| Send the Loom to 5 store owners you built for and ask which manual step annoys them most | about 2 hours | 5 messages sent; answers noted | 2 store owners. | Skip until next week. |
Signal by day 30: You can show a working order-to-Sheet-to-alert workflow on a call without notes, and at least one person has asked a follow-up question about it.
Days 31–60: Solve one annoyance a store owner named
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build the annoyance a store owner named (low-stock alert, COD confirmation, invoice to Drive) on a copy of their setup | about 12 hours | the owner sees it work on their test data | Build it on your own test store. | Hand over what's done with notes. |
| Read n8n's docs on error workflows and credentials; move all keys out of nodes | about 3 hours | no API key is visible in an exported workflow | Just the credentials part. | Note it as a known gap. |
| Apply to 8 automation roles with the Loom link in line one | about 4 hours | 8 applications logged | 4 applications. | Put it on hold until your current interviews are done, then come back to it. |
Signal by day 60: A store owner has let you look at their real workflow, or you've reached a technical round for an automation role.
Days 61–90: A paid trial or a portfolio of two
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Run the store-owner workflow live for 2 weeks with a weekly check | about 8 hours | a short log of runs and failures exists | Run it on your test store with fake orders. | Leave it running unattended; review later. |
| Write a LinkedIn post: 'what one WooCommerce workflow saved a store owner' (anonymised if needed) and message 10 WordPress agencies | about 4 hours | post live and 10 messages sent | Message 5 agencies, no post. | Keep the draft for later. |
Signal by day 90: A small paid automation for a past client, a monthly maintenance add-on, or a second-round interview.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'n8n', 'Make.com', 'workflow automation' and 'WooCommerce automation' on LinkedIn, Naukri and Upwork. Postings name the tool. Match it.
- Store owners you built for are your first audience: they already trust your access to their site.
- WordPress agencies increasingly sell automation add-ons. Message the owner or delivery lead.
- Proof = exported workflow JSON (keys removed), a Loom, and one sentence on the time saved.
One search that fits your background
The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.
The two worries we hear most about this move
My clients are small businesses. Is that a disadvantage? It's an advantage. Small businesses need simple automations (forms to sheets, order alerts, WhatsApp messages) and they already trust WordPress people. Start with a client you know. I'm used to PHP. Is automation harder? No. Hooks are triggers and actions under a different name. The new parts are handling failures and keeping credentials safe, which the proof project covers.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.

Job or freelance?
- Job: search Naukri, LinkedIn, Instahyre and Cutshort for "n8n", "workflow automation", "Zoho". Steadier, slower to land.
- Freelance: past clients first, then Contra and Upwork (we haven't verified their fees or India terms — read them before signing up). An "AI automation agency" is a common pitch (2,900 searches/month in India, 4,400 US); you don't need to call yourself one.
Headline, before → after
Before: "WordPress & WooCommerce Developer" After: "I connect WordPress, CRMs and WhatsApp so small businesses stop copy-pasting leads · n8n · Make"
Client-call angles
- "Walk me through what happens after someone fills your form." (Then listen for copy-paste.)
- "What happens if this breaks?" — answer with logging, alerts and a manual fallback.
- In interviews, show the execution log of your proof project, not just a screenshot.
Junior, mid or senior: where you start
Freshers: two proof builds before pitching. Mid-level: package past WooCommerce work as automation. Senior and 40+: sell the audit; your judgement on what not to automate is the product.
Before you pay anyone for "automation training"
No real platform charges a joining fee. Use official domains only. Never share an OTP or UPI PIN. No VPNs to fake your location. India: cybercrime.gov.in or 1930. US: ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Hooks-to-workflows questions
n8n or Make first? n8n if you like code and self-hosting; Make if you want zero setup. Both are fine. Do clients in India pay for this? Some do, especially for WhatsApp and lead handling. We can't promise rates or volume. Is self-hosting n8n safe for clients? Only if you can maintain updates and backups. Otherwise use a paid cloud plan. What about client data? Collect only what's needed, get consent, and document where data goes. This isn't legal advice.
