- Have you written a cron job or a Laravel scheduled task? (yes / no)
- Have you built a webhook endpoint that another service called? (yes / no)
- Have you ever thought "this integration is 80% boilerplate"? (yes / no)
Entry: what the job is
You connect business tools — forms, CRMs, sheets, WhatsApp, payment notifications — so repetitive work runs by itself. Sometimes an AI step reads or drafts text in the middle. The tools are visual (n8n, Make), but under the hood it's the same HTTP, auth and JSON you already know.
Entry: the translation table
| In PHP you'd write… | In n8n it's… |
|---|---|
$schedule->command(...)->daily() |
Schedule Trigger node |
| A webhook route + controller | Webhook node |
Guzzle ->post() with headers |
HTTP Request node + credentials |
try/catch + log + retry |
Error workflow, retry on fail |
| A job queue | Wait node, sub-workflows, queue mode (self-hosted) |
| Business logic in a service class | Code node (JavaScript or Python) |
Cron Line Translator
Paste a crontab line you've lived with — */15 * * * *, 0 2 * * 1, whatever it was — and the page tells you in plain English what it did ("every 15 minutes", "2 a.m. every Monday") and shows the matching Schedule Trigger settings. Choose from a few common PHP tasks too (nightly invoice reminders, stock sync, report email). It's a small thing. But seeing your old server's heartbeat turned into a workflow is oddly moving.

Entry: n8n or Make
n8n suits you if you like self-hosting and code: Community Edition is free to run on your own server; cloud has a trial (1,000 executions, no card) then paid plans from 20€/month on annual billing. Make suits quick client work: free plan with 1,000 credits/month. As a PHP developer you'll probably feel at home in n8n first. Learn both eventually — clients choose.
Entry: self-hosting, honestly
You can run n8n on a small VPS the way you've run PHP apps. That's a real advantage for Indian clients who want data on their own server. It also makes you responsible for updates, backups, SSL and access control — the same duties as any server. Put that in your quote.
Entry: the AI step
Use it where reading or drafting text helps: classify incoming enquiries, pull fields from an invoice email, draft a reply for a human to approve. Keep a human in the loop at first. You can also call AI models from PHP directly (the community openai-php/client library exists), which is handy when a client's logic must stay in their Laravel app.
Entry: rank what matters to you
Put these in order: self-hosting · speed of delivery · keeping PHP in the stack · client-facing work · steady job vs freelance. If self-hosting or PHP tops your list, lead with n8n self-hosted or a hybrid "Laravel + n8n" offer. If speed of delivery comes first, Make is the quicker start. No wrong answers.
Entry: first projects that make good proof
- Port a Laravel scheduled task (say, overdue invoice reminders) to n8n with an error workflow.
- Port a webhook controller (payment success → update sheet → notify on WhatsApp/email).
- Add an AI step that sorts enquiries into three buckets, with human approval. Each gets a readme with a diagram, test runs and what happens when it fails.

n8n QS101, then N8N101–103 from the official course list (price not shown — check before enrolling). n8n node docs for Webhook and Schedule Trigger. Make's in-app tutorials. Postman's free plan for exploring APIs. No certificate required.
Entry: where work is
India first: many SMBs already run PHP sites and Zoho or Sheets; you can offer "your site, now connected". Search Naukri, LinkedIn, Instahyre, Cutshort for "n8n developer", "automation engineer", "integration developer", "Zoho developer". Freelance via past clients first; Upwork and Contra are possible but their fees/terms are unverified by us. The n8n Creators hub lets you publish templates.

Your realistic 90 days
Your PHP years are full of glue code — scripts that pulled orders, pushed invoices, sent SMS through a gateway, and broke when an API (application programming interface) changed. Automation specialists build that glue visually and own it. You'll start by porting one script you've already written.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Wrote a PHP script on cron to sync orders to a CRM | Build the same sync in n8n with retries, logs and an alert |
| Parsed webhook payloads with json_decode | Map webhook fields with n8n expressions, and drop to a Code node only when needed |
| SSH'd in at night to rerun failed jobs | Set up an error workflow that tells you before the client does |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find one sync or cron script you wrote (or remember well); write its steps as plain bullets | 6–10 bullets |
| 2 | Run n8n Community Edition on your laptop with Docker, or open a Make free account | Editor opens |
| 3 | Rebuild the script's first half: trigger + fetch + map fields | Test data flows to a Sheet |
| 4 | Finish it: write to the destination, then add an error workflow | A forced error reaches your email |
| 5 | Compare the run log with your old PHP log; note what you gained and lost | Half a page of notes |
| 6 | Record a 2-minute Loom of old script vs. new workflow | Link saved |
| 7 | Save 10 automation postings that mention APIs or webhooks | 10 links |
Days 1–30: Port one real script
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Port your sync script to n8n with error handling and an exported, key-free JSON | about 12 hours over 3 weeks | workflow and JSON on GitHub with a README | Port only the trigger and mapping. | Export what you have. |
| Send the Loom to 5 past clients or managers who ran similar scripts | about 2 hours | 5 messages sent | 2 messages. | Skip this week. |
Signal by day 30: You can explain the script-to-workflow port in an interview in under 3 minutes.
Days 31–60: A business-facing workflow
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build a workflow an office would want: invoice PDF in email → data in Sheet → approval message | about 12 hours | it handles 10 test emails correctly | Handle the Sheet step only. | Park it after 5 test emails. |
| Apply to 8 roles (automation engineer, integration developer, RPA developer) with both Looms linked | about 4 hours | 8 applications logged | 4 applications. | Put it on hold until your current interviews are done, then come back to it. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call for an automation role, or a client conversation about one manual task.
Days 61–90: Paid trial or interview depth
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offer one past client a 2-week trial of a workflow that replaces a manual task they told you about | about 10 hours | trial running with weekly notes | Run it on your own data. | End the trial early with a handover note. |
| Write down how you'd price and maintain a workflow (hours, alerts, who owns credentials) — no numbers you can't stand behind | about 2 hours | a one-page maintenance note | A list of 5 points. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
Signal by day 90: A small paid workflow or a technical round where you walked through your error handling.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'n8n developer', 'workflow automation', 'integration developer' and 'Make.com' on LinkedIn, Naukri and Upwork.
- Agencies that once hired PHP freelancers now sell automation. Message delivery heads directly.
- Show a before/after: old script vs. new workflow. It proves you understand both.
One search that fits your background
The full set of search strings for this move is on the route page. They work on LinkedIn, Naukri and foundit; Instahyre and Cutshort are worth a weekly look too. Add your old job title to any of them with AND, so recruiters who want both skills find you first.
The two worries we hear most about this move
Is PHP experience relevant to automation tools? Very. Cron jobs, webhooks, form handlers and API calls are what automation tools wrap in a visual editor. You'll recognise most of it within a day; the new habit is designing for failures you can't see in a browser. Will clients pay for automation when tools are 'no-code'? Many small businesses try the tools themselves, get stuck on errors or credentials, and look for help. Your proof should show error handling and a hand-over note, which is exactly where they get stuck.
Other worries, such as age, a career gap, no degree, English, family pressure and savings, are covered on the route page and the role page.

Visual tools can feel limiting at first — use Code nodes, but sparingly, or the next person can't maintain it. Platform pricing changes; re-check before quoting. Client data: DPDP in India, GDPR for EU clients — not legal advice.

Entry: quick answers
Will I miss PHP? You can keep it: many offers are "Laravel app + n8n workflows". Is self-hosting allowed commercially? Check n8n's licence terms for your use case; we're not giving legal advice. Make or n8n for Indian SMBs? Either; WhatsApp and Sheets integrations exist in both ecosystems.
