What the work looks like, week to week
- Visit shops and dealers on a fixed beat plan (a set weekly route of outlets).
- Take orders and track them in the company app.
- Open new outlets and new dealers in your area.
- Run local schemes and displays.
- Collect payments and solve dealer problems.
- Send a simple daily report: visits, orders, new outlets.
Who this suits
People who like travelling in their area, talking to shop owners in the local language, and working to a monthly target.
Probably not for you if you want a desk job with fixed hours.
Free tools and sources to start with (checked 29 Oct 2026)
- Field-sales apps. Many consumer goods firms plan beats and take orders in Salesforce Consumer Goods Cloud or a regional field sales app (www.salesforce.com).
- Government skills portals. Many countries run free skill courses, including sales; one example is Skill India Digital (www.skillindiadigital.gov.in).
Your first proof
Use only your phone. Pick 10 shops in one market you know. Visit or call each and note 3 things: which brands sell most, what the owner complains about, and when the distributor comes. Put it in a simple sheet or a WhatsApp note. Write 5 lines on how you would grow sales in that market. This is your proof for the interview.
Your realistic 90 days
You will be ready for territory sales, area sales manager (ASM), rural marketing and dealer development interviews with a market report you made on your phone.
Assumes 2 to 3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. A signal is not a promise of a job.
Worries people bring to this route
- My English is weak. Most field jobs need the local language. Your interview can be in the local language.
- Targets scare me. Ask how the target and incentive work before you join.
- I have no degree. Many territory sales officer (TSO) jobs take a school-leaving certificate with field experience. Check each post.

Where the openings are, and what to type
Start with LinkedIn, local job boards and company career pages; senior roles are often filled by referral, so ask early.
- LinkedIn search string:
("territory sales officer" OR "area sales manager" OR "dealer development" OR "rural marketing" OR "sales officer consumer goods") - Local job board keywords: territory sales officer, area sales manager, dealer development executive, rural marketing, sales officer consumer goods
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search LinkedIn and your local job boards for TSO, ASM and dealer development jobs in your district.
- Tell them the areas and shops you know.
- Ask your old distributors which companies are hiring.
Fake-job traps
Watch for 'distributor' or 'agency' offers that ask for a deposit, jobs that ask you to buy stock first, and anyone asking for one-time codes, bank or payment app PINs. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report it to your national cybercrime or consumer fraud agency and to the job site where you saw the ad.
Common questions
Do I need my own bike? Many field jobs ask for one and pay a travel allowance. Ask before you join.
Is the pay fixed? Usually a fixed part plus incentive. Ask how much is fixed.
