What carries over
| What you did as a brand manager | Where it shows up now |
|---|---|
| Owned the brand plan and P&L | Own the online category plan |
| Briefed agencies on creative | Brief listing images and A+ content |
| Tracked offtake and share | Read marketplace sales and share reports |
| Ran launches with sales teams | Run launches with marketplace account managers |
What is new
- Marketplace ads and search ranking.
- Listing quality: titles, images, reviews.
- Weekly price and stock checks across sellers.
Try it: Listing fix
Four cards come up. Fix what stops a shopper buying. Each card's back says why.
Listing fix
Your first proof in 30 days
Audit one brand's top 5 marketplace listings: images, title, reviews, price and stock. Publish a one-page fix list with the 3 changes you would make first.
Worries, answered
Is this a step down from brand manager? No. Online is where much of a brand's growth is decided now, and category roles often own a bigger share of sales than offline brand roles.
I have never run marketplace ads. Most platforms have free learning centres. Start with the basics of sponsored product ads and read one weekly report before you apply.
Your realistic 90 days
You worked as a brand manager. This plan moves you toward a category and e-commerce brand manager role in 90 days, using what you already do.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read one marketplace's seller learning centre basics | Notes written |
| 2 | Pick a brand with 5 listings to audit | Brand chosen |
| 3 | Score the 5 main images | Scores noted |
| 4 | Score titles and bullet points | Scores noted |
| 5 | Read 50 reviews and group complaints | 3 themes listed |
| 6 | Check price and stock across sellers | Table filled |
| 7 | Write the one-page fix list | Fix list done |
Days 1–30: Your proof
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audit 3 listings for one brand against 3 competitors and write a fix list | about 6 hours over 3 weeks | audit published | 1 listing. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Show the audit to 5 people who hire for e-commerce brand roles | about 1 hour | 5 messages | Just 2 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 30: Someone in the field replies to your proof.
Days 31–60: Applications
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build a weekly scorecard with sales, ad share, search rank and stock-out days | about 8 hours | scorecard link | A blank template. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Apply to 10 'e-commerce brand manager' or 'category manager' roles | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Just 5 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Interviews for category and e-commerce brand manager roles
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise a case: a hero SKU drops from page 1 on Amazon. What do you check? | about 2 hours | 3 runs | 1 run. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Ask 3 former colleagues for referrals into e-commerce teams | about 2 hours | 3 asks | Just 1 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 90: A second round or a paid trial.

Fake-job traps
Watch for postings that charge a registration or certificate fee, 'work from home' review or like-and-earn tasks, and anyone asking for one-time codes, bank or payment app PINs or a deposit before you start. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report it to your national cybercrime or consumer fraud agency and to the job site where you saw the ad.
