- Have you ever said "who does this step, and why do they do it by hand?" in a meeting? Yes / No
- Does a messy process annoy you a little more than it should? Yes / No
- Would you rather build a small thing than write a 40-page spec about it? Yes / Sometimes / Absolutely not
An automation business analyst finds the work in a business that should run by itself, designs how it should run, and often builds or prototypes the first version. It sits between classic business analysis and automation development. Titles include automation BA, RPA (robotic process automation) business analyst, process analyst, intelligent automation analyst and Power Platform functional consultant.
Bot or Not? Lightning Round
Ten process steps flash up one at a time: "copy invoice total into ERP", "decide whether to waive a late fee for a loyal customer", "send reminder 3 days before due date", "negotiate a vendor discount". You have five seconds each to tap Bot or Not. The cartoon robot cheers or sulks. At the end, the reasons appear: frequency, rules, stability, judgement. It's silly on purpose; the four reasons are the real lesson.

Your proof, as a case study
Pick one process you know well, such as invoice approval or employee onboarding. Write a baseline (steps, hand-offs, where it waits), map the to-be version, build one automated step in a free tool, and publish a two-page case study with a short Loom-style walkthrough. Done when someone outside the process can read the case study and explain what changed.
Is automation BA work for you?
BAs with process-mapping experience; operations people who've lived inside messy processes; manual testers who enjoy finding where things break. It suits people who like counting, and people who can tell a business owner "this step shouldn't be automated" without flinching.
The search picture
"Rpa business analyst" gets about 170 searches a month in India and 50 in the US; "automation business analyst" about 40 and 30; "power platform functional consultant" about 20 in each (OpenSEO, 24 Oct 2026). Small numbers mean you'll find roles by searching several titles, not one.
Automation analyst pay
We haven't verified pay data for automation BA, RPA BA or process analyst roles. Compare live listings for your city and experience level rather than trusting any figure quoted in a course ad.
"RPA developer in 30 days, 100% placement" offers
Placement-guarantee courses that ask for payment to a personal UPI ID are a common trap. UiPath, Microsoft and Make all train on their own official sites. Never share OTPs or UPI PINs with anyone. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Your realistic 90 days
Business analysts, process analysts and operations leads come here. An automation BA finds which steps to automate, writes the spec and proves the saving. Your starting artefact is an as-is process map you drew.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring to this route
- Am I too old or too senior for a CoE? Process knowledge accumulates. Senior BAs with domain depth are what automation CoEs lack.
- A career gap. Map one real process (anonymised) into a PDD (process definition document) and date it.
- Degree. BA roles accept most graduates; domain counts more.
- English documentation. PDDs are tables and flowcharts; clarity over vocabulary.
- Family worries you're leaving IT. It's still a BA job inside IT, with a clearer outcome.
- Runway. Keep applying to standard BA roles too.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
