What the work looks like, week to week
- Set up Performance Max and Advantage+ campaigns with clean conversion tracking.
- Feed better signals: offline conversions, value rules, first-party audiences.
- Test creative in planned rounds and keep the winners.
- Check that results are real: tracking, attribution and brand-search cannibalisation.
- Report cost per order and new-customer share alongside ROAS.
- Explain to clients what the AI is doing and what you control.
Who this suits
Performance marketers who like testing, can read data, and want to stay in performance roles.
Probably not for you if you want to move away from targets and dashboards.

Your first proof
With a small budget you or a friend can afford, run a 2-week Meta Advantage+ or Performance Max test for a friend's shop. Before you start, check the conversion tracking. Report cost per order, what you changed in creative and signals, and what you would do next. If you can't spend money, write the same plan for a brand and say it is a plan, not a result.
Your realistic 90 days
You will be ready to interview for performance roles with a test you ran or planned, and a clear view of what you control in AI-run campaigns.
Assumes 2 to 3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. A signal is not a promise of a job.
Worries people bring to this route
- Will AI take my job? AI runs bids; brands still hire people to run inputs and check outputs. Watch the posts yourself.
- No budget to test. A written plan is fine if you say it is a plan.
- My last results were average. Explain what you learned and what you'd change.

Where the openings are, and what to type
Start with LinkedIn, local job boards and company career pages; senior roles are often filled by referral, so ask early.
- LinkedIn search string:
("performance marketing" OR "performance marketer" OR "paid media" OR "Performance Max" OR "Advantage+") - Local job board keywords: performance marketing, performance marketer, paid media, Google Ads, Meta ads
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'performance marketing' and read which posts name PMax or Advantage+.
- Lead with one test and what you changed.
- Show how you check tracking before you trust results.
Fake-job traps
Watch for 'performance marketing' courses sold with a job guarantee, offers that ask for a fee, and anyone asking for an OTP. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report it to your national cybercrime or consumer fraud agency and to the job site where you saw the ad.
Common questions
Should I learn new tools? Know GA4, Google Ads, Meta and one tracking tool well; that covers most posts.
Agency or brand side? Both hire; brand roles often want ownership of a number.
