You kept other people's WordPress sites alive

Plugin updates, white screens, hacked sites, expired SSL, slow pages, and the client who called at 11 PM because the contact form stopped. You learned how WordPress breaks and how to bring it back.

Now hosts run automatic updates, AI site builders launch simple sites, and AI assistants suggest fixes. Routine updates are the part being automated first. What stays scarce is someone who owns the site, tests before and after, restores fast and explains it clearly to the owner. Small businesses and large hosts both need this work.

WordPress.com launched a free AI site builder in April 2025 that drafts a simple site from a prompt (TechCrunch, Apr 2025). Anthropic's study of coding conversations found that in its coding tool, more tasks were handed to AI to complete than to assist with (Anthropic, 2025), and WordPress's own handbook notes that automatic core updates are now on by default for most sites (WordPress handbook). These describe the work in general, not your city or your skills. The rest of this page is our reading of the work itself.

Try it: Update Night

Four update decisions arrive on a Friday night. Choose which to run now and which to hold back.

Update Night

Three routes that reuse what you did

Did site owners trust you more than the agency that built the site? A WordPress care business sells monthly updates, backups, uptime checks and small fixes to a handful of clients. Route: WordPress Care Business.

Did you like the night a site went down and you brought it back? SRE and production support engineers keep larger systems running and write down how to fix them. Route: SRE / Production Support.

Did you always test the site after every update? Productised QA turns testing into a clear, repeatable service with a fixed scope. Route: Productised QA.

Pay, honestly

We haven't verified pay data for these routes. A care business is often paid monthly by clients, while SRE and QA roles are often salaried; weigh the risk as well as the pay.

Your realistic 90 days

You maintained WordPress sites. Hosts and AI tools now automate routine updates, so your value moves to owning sites for clients, running larger systems or testing as a service.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring when leaving this job

  • Hosts automate updates now. They update; someone still tests, restores and explains.
  • I only did small sites. Small sites taught you every common failure, which every route uses.
  • I am not a developer. Care work and QA need care and process more than new code.
  • Gap in work. A recent care report shows your skills are current.
  • No degree. A checklist, a report and a restore log are proof anyone can check.
  • I need income quickly. A first care client can bring some income while you build the longer route, though finding one takes time.

Where the openings are, and what to type

Hosting companies, WordPress agencies, small-business clients, SaaS firms and QA services. LinkedIn, Naukri and freelance platforms all carry this work.

Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.

  • LinkedIn search string: ("WordPress maintenance" OR "website maintenance" OR "WordPress support" OR "production support" OR "QA engineer")
  • Naukri / foundit keywords: WordPress maintenance, website maintenance, WordPress support, production support, QA tester

Job-hunt moves that matter for this route

  • Search 'WordPress support', 'production support' and 'QA' on LinkedIn and Naukri, then filter to the last week.
  • Put one care report with before-and-after checks in your portfolio.
  • Show a restore you tested on staging, with times.

Job scams aimed at developers

Watch for 'developer internships' or 'live project training' that charge a registration, laptop or certificate fee, 'test tasks' that ask you to build a full product for free, and anyone asking for an OTP, UPI PIN, a deposit or remote access to your bank before you start. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US, ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

What people in this role ask

Will AI replace WordPress maintenance work? Routine updates are being automated. Owning sites, restoring and explaining still need people.

Should I start a care business? Only with one or two clients first and a clear written scope.

Do I need Linux for SRE? Yes, the basics. Start with the command line you already use for WP-CLI.
