Try it: Shelf to screen
Four cards come up. Keep the tiles that help a shopper choose. Each card's back says why.
Shelf to screen
Your first proof in 30 days
Re-merchandise one online store's collection page: a before and after screenshot, the new sort order and a short note on why each of the top 8 products moved.
Worries, answered
I am not technical. You do not need to code. Store admin panels use drag and drop and simple forms, and free trials let you practise.
Does my store experience count? Yes. Knowing what makes a shopper stop and pick up a product is the core skill; the screen is a new shelf.
Your realistic 90 days
You worked as a visual merchandiser. This plan moves you toward an e-commerce merchandiser role in 90 days, using what you already do.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick an online store you like | Store chosen |
| 2 | Screenshot one collection page | Saved |
| 3 | List the top 8 products and their stock | List made |
| 4 | Check each tile: photo, price, sizes | Notes written |
| 5 | Draft a new order for the 8 | New order drafted |
| 6 | Mock up the new page | Mock-up done |
| 7 | Write 8 lines on why | Note done |
Days 1–30: Your proof
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Redo one app category page's first 12 products and explain each move | about 6 hours over 3 weeks | redo published | First 6 products. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Send your fixed listing to 5 people who hire for e-commerce merchandising | about 1 hour | 5 messages | Just 2 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 30: Someone in the field replies to your proof.
Days 31–60: Applications
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| List 20 catalog errors across 2 apps and how you'd fix each | about 6 hours | error log link | 10 errors. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Apply to 10 'ecommerce merchandiser', 'catalog executive' or 'planogram analyst' roles | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Just 5 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Interviews for e-commerce merchandiser and catalog executive roles
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise explaining one window or wall you built, with what sold after | about 2 hours | 3 runs | 1 run. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Ask 3 former colleagues for referrals into online teams | about 2 hours | 3 asks | Just 1 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 90: A second round or a paid trial.
