You turned designs into pages that actually worked

PSD and Figma files, pixel checks, browser bugs, email templates that broke in one mail app, and the last-minute "make the button bigger". You learned to turn a picture of a page into working HTML and CSS.

FromUI DeveloperToDesign Engineer

Now AI tools and prompt-to-app builders write first-draft markup in minutes. Plain slicing is the part being automated first. What stays scarce is someone who builds reusable components, checks that pages work for every user, and hands clients sites they can run. Small agencies and large product teams both need this.

Anthropic's study of coding conversations found that building user interfaces with JavaScript, HTML and CSS is among the most common uses of its AI for code, and suggests jobs centred on simple apps and interfaces may feel the change sooner (Anthropic, 2025). Investors at a16z describe tools that turn a prompt into a working web app (a16z), and LeadDev reported that front-end developer job postings fell 25% worldwide between January 2024 and January 2025, while people in the field say the effect of AI on the role is overstated (LeadDev, Aug 2025). These describe the work in general, not your city or your skills. The rest of this page is our reading of the work itself.

Try it: Ship or Fix the Slice

Four AI-made slices land in your review queue. Decide which to ship and which to fix.

Ship or Fix the Slice

Three routes that reuse what you did

Did you care how the spacing and type felt, not only whether it matched? Design engineers turn a design system into reusable, tested components that designers and developers share. Route: Design Engineer.

Did you notice when a layout broke for keyboard or screen-reader users? Accessibility specialists test and fix sites against WCAG so everyone can use them. Route: Accessibility Specialist.

Did clients care more about launching fast than about the code? Framer and Webflow experts build and hand over marketing sites that clients can edit themselves. Route: Framer/Webflow Expert.

Pay, honestly

We haven't verified pay data for these routes. Design engineering and accessibility roles are often salaried, while Webflow and Framer work is often per project; ask what you would own before you compare offers.

Your realistic 90 days

You sliced designs into HTML and CSS. AI tools now draft that markup, so your value moves to components, accessibility and sites clients can run.

Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.

Worries people bring when leaving this job

  • AI writes HTML now. It writes drafts. Someone still checks, fixes and maintains them.
  • I never used React. Design engineering starts with clean CSS and components; frameworks come later.
  • My work was agency slicing. Agency volume taught you speed and browser quirks that every route uses.
  • Gap in work. A recent rebuild with notes shows your skills are current.
  • No degree in computer science. A public repo you can explain is proof anyone can check.
  • I need income quickly. Webflow and Framer projects can start small while you build a longer proof.

Where the openings are, and what to type

Product companies with design systems, agencies, SaaS firms and accessibility consultancies. LinkedIn, Naukri and freelance platforms all carry these roles.

Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.

  • LinkedIn search string: ("UI developer" OR "design engineer" OR "design system" OR "accessibility" OR "WCAG" OR "Webflow developer")
  • Naukri / foundit keywords: UI developer, design system, accessibility tester, WCAG, Webflow developer, Framer developer

Job-hunt moves that matter for this route

  • Search 'design system', 'accessibility' and 'Webflow developer' on LinkedIn and Naukri, then filter to the last week.
  • Put one before-and-after component rebuild in your portfolio with notes.
  • Show a short accessibility fix list for a real public page.

Job scams aimed at developers

Watch for 'developer internships' or 'live project training' that charge a registration, laptop or certificate fee, 'test tasks' that ask you to build a full product for free, and anyone asking for an OTP, UPI PIN, a deposit or remote access to your bank before you start. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US, ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

What people in this role ask

Will AI replace UI developers? Plain slicing is being automated. Components, accessibility and handover still need people.

Do I need to learn React? It helps for design engineering. Accessibility and Webflow work need it less.

Agency or product company? Agencies want speed across many sites; product teams want one system done well.
