What carries over
| What you did as a consumer goods trade marketer | Where it shows up now |
|---|---|
| Planned trade schemes | Plan promotions with each chain |
| Tracked secondary sales | Read chain and app sell-through |
| Managed visibility in stores | Manage shelf and app placement |
| Worked with distributors | Work with chain buyers and category teams |
What is new
- Joint business plans with buyers.
- Quick-commerce stock and dark store data.
- Margin and promotion maths per account.
Try it: Buyer meeting
Four cards come up. Agree, or counter with data. Each card's back says why.
Buyer meeting
Your first proof in 30 days
Write a one-page joint business plan for one brand at one chain or app: last quarter's numbers (estimated if needed), 3 actions and the promotion calendar.
Worries, answered
I have only worked with distributors. Distributors and chain buyers want the same things: margin, stock and sell-through. The meetings are just fewer and bigger.
I am not strong in Excel. You need sums, filters and a simple pivot table. Practise on one sample sales sheet for a week.
Your realistic 90 days
You worked as a consumer goods trade marketer. This plan moves you toward a modern trade and quick-commerce key account manager role in 90 days, using what you already do.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one brand and one chain or app | Chosen |
| 2 | Note the brand's range there | Range listed |
| 3 | Estimate weekly sales from reviews and ranks | Estimate made |
| 4 | List 3 growth actions | Actions listed |
| 5 | Build a promo calendar | Calendar done |
| 6 | Write the one-page plan | Plan done |
| 7 | Save 10 KAM postings | 10 links |
Days 1–30: Your proof
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build a one-page business review for a sample quick-commerce account | about 6 hours over 3 weeks | review published | Sell-out and fill rate only. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Show it to 5 KAMs or sales managers at consumer goods firms | about 1 hour | 5 messages | Just 2 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 30: Someone in the field replies to your proof.
Days 31–60: Applications
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Analyse one past scheme you ran: cost, uplift and whether it paid back | about 6 hours | analysis link | Cost and uplift only. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Apply to 10 'key account manager modern trade' or 'channel analyst' roles | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Just 5 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call.
Days 61–90: Interviews for modern trade and quick-commerce key account manager roles
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise a mock negotiation: the buyer asks for a deeper discount | about 2 hours | 3 runs | 1 run. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Ask 3 former sales colleagues for referrals | about 2 hours | 3 asks | Just 1 this week. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 90: A second round or a paid trial.

Fake-job traps
Watch for postings that charge a registration or certificate fee, 'work from home' review or like-and-earn tasks, and anyone asking for one-time codes, bank or payment app PINs or a deposit before you start. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report it to your national cybercrime or consumer fraud agency and to the job site where you saw the ad.
