Then AI tools arrived and the parts that were easiest to describe went first: captions, blog drafts, ad variations, the monthly slide. If you were let go, or your agency stopped renewing retainers, that is the layer that thinned. What did not thin is the part where someone has to know which customer matters, what to tell them, and whether it worked.
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 says slower economic growth is "among the top contributors to job decline in ... Sales and Marketing Professionals" (WEF, Jan 2025). The ILO's 2025 update adds that "transformation of jobs is the most likely impact of GenAI" (ILO, May 2025). Both are about whole categories, not your city or your skills. What follows is our reading of the work itself (observation).
Try it: Monday Task Sorter
Sort a typical Monday list into "AI drafts this now" and "still needs you". Most people find the second pile is the one they were quietly best at.
Monday Task Sorter
Three routes, three different weeks
| Freelance marketing for small businesses | AEO / GEO (AI-search) specialist | Lifecycle and WhatsApp CRM marketer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| A typical Tuesday | Fix a dentist's Google profile, shoot 6 reels for a sweet shop, send two invoices | Rewrite 5 pages so AI answers can quote them; check where your brand is cited | Build a 3-message welcome flow; clean a contact list; read last week's replies |
| Who pays | Shop owners, clinics, coaches, local services | Brands, agencies, SaaS firms | D2C brands, edtech, clinics, retail chains |
| First proof | Three local businesses set up properly, before and after | An AI-search audit of one brand, with fixes | A working WhatsApp or email flow on a demo business |
| Hard part | Selling and chasing payment | The field changes monthly; few job titles yet | Consent rules and dull data cleaning |
| Start here | Freelance SMB marketer | AEO / GEO specialist | Lifecycle and WhatsApp CRM |
If you liked the client calls, look at the first column. If you liked Search Console more than Instagram, the second. If you were the one who kept the spreadsheet of leads, the third.

- Google Search Console. Free; shows the searches that bring people to a site (Search Console).
- WhatsApp Business app. Free app with a catalogue, quick replies and labels (WhatsApp Business).

Pay, honestly
We haven't verified pay data for digital marketing roles. It varies a lot by city, agency or in-house, and whether you are paid per project.
Fake marketing jobs to avoid
Watch for 'marketing internships' that charge a registration or certificate fee, 'work from home' review or like-and-earn tasks, and anyone asking for an OTP, UPI PIN or a deposit before you start. Real employers never charge you to hire you. Use official domains only. Report in India at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930; in the US, ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Your realistic 90 days
You ran posts, ads, SEO basics and reports, often alone. AI now drafts the posts and the report slides, so your value moves to choosing the customer, the offer and the proof that it worked.
Assumes 2–3 hours a day alongside job applications, a laptop and a phone, and free plans only. Every step has a smaller version and a way to pause. Use them. It runs in three blocks of 30 days, each ending with a signal that you're on track. A signal is not a promise of a job or income.
What AI changed in your old tasks
| You used to… | Now you… |
|---|---|
| Wrote 20 captions a week | Plan 5 posts that answer real customer questions, and let AI draft |
| Pasted numbers into a monthly deck | Show one decision the numbers changed |
| Boosted posts on a hunch | Set one goal per campaign and stop it when it fails |
Your first 7 days
| Day | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write down every task from your last job and mark which AI tools now draft | List of 15 tasks |
| 2 | Open Google Business Profile help and read the get-started page | Notes on 5 settings |
| 3 | Look up 3 shops near you on Maps and note what is wrong | 3 notes |
| 4 | Pick the route column that sounds like your best Tuesday | Route chosen |
| 5 | Ask 2 old clients or colleagues what they still need help with | 2 replies |
| 6 | Make a one-page 'what I do now' note in plain words | One page |
| 7 | Save 10 postings for the route you picked | 10 links |
Days 1–30: A real before-and-after
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set up or fix the online presence of one real local business with permission | about 10 hours over 3 weeks | before-and-after screenshots | Just the Google profile. | Stop at the end of the step you're on and write two lines about where you stopped. Pick it up from those notes later. |
| Tell 5 former colleagues or clients which route you chose | about 1 hour | 5 messages | Tell 2 former colleagues or clients which route you chose. | Optional. If reaching out feels like too much this week, skip it and put the time into your proof. |
Signal by day 30: Someone outside your family asks how you did it.
Days 31–60: Second case and applications
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build the first proof for your chosen route | about 8 hours | proof link | A one-page plan. | Put it on hold until your current interviews are done, then come back to it. |
| Apply to 10 roles where your digital marketing executive years count | about 5 hours | 10 logged | Apply to 5 roles. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 60: A screening call or a paid small job.
Days 61–90: Interviews
| Step | Time | Done when | Smaller version | If you need to pause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practise explaining one campaign that failed and what you changed | about 2 hours | rehearsed twice | Notes only. | Optional. Skip it if the week is full; nothing later depends on it. |
| Ask 3 former digital marketing executive colleagues for referrals | about 2 hours | 3 asks | Just one instead of 3. | Stop sending for now. Keep a list of who you've contacted so you can follow up later without doubling up. |
Signal by day 90: A second round or a repeat client.
Job-hunt moves that matter for this route
- Search 'digital marketing executive' plus 'local SEO', 'WhatsApp', 'CRM' or 'AI' on Naukri and LinkedIn.
- Agencies hire on a work sample; bring one before-and-after case.
- Shop owners hire through people they know; tell your neighbourhood what you do.
Where the openings are, and what to type
Also worth a weekly look: Instahyre, Cutshort, Wellfound, and iimjobs or hirist for senior roles. Upwork and Contra if you want freelance work.
Agencies, D2C brands, clinics, coaching institutes, real-estate firms and local shops. Naukri and LinkedIn carry most agency roles; local work comes through referrals and WhatsApp groups.
- LinkedIn search string:
("digital marketing executive" OR "digital marketing specialist") AND ("local SEO" OR WhatsApp OR CRM OR "AI") - Naukri / foundit keywords: digital marketing executive, local SEO, WhatsApp marketing, CRM executive
Worries people bring when leaving this job
- I'm 35 and agencies hire 22-year-olds. Shop owners and D2C founders often prefer someone who has handled real customers and deadlines (observation).
- Gap since the layoff. One dated local case study closes most of that conversation.
- Only a certificate, no degree. Common in this field; proof matters more.
- English isn't my strongest. Local clients often prefer Hindi or your state language; that is an advantage.
- Family wants a 'proper job'. Two of these routes are full-time jobs at brands; freelancing is optional.
- Savings are thin. Small local jobs can start within weeks; pick the freelance route first if income is urgent.

What digital marketers ask
Is digital marketing dead because of AI? No. The routine production layer is thinner. Planning, local trust, customer data and honest reporting still need people. We can't promise how any single employer will choose.
Do I need to learn coding? No for all three routes. Comfort with spreadsheets, forms and simple automation tools is enough to start.
I only have a certificate course, not a degree. Small businesses and many agencies hire on proof. A before-and-after case for a real shop beats a certificate list.
